  1. ‘The temple of our heart’ can by far be the greatest reality of our life! • The great detail in which worship was “regulated” • in the Old Testament, e.g. Mosaic law, Tabernacle in • the wilderness, Temple service, Priests, Levites, offering… • Matthew 15:17Jesus said: • “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the • Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill • them.

We have access by faith to God’s graceand God’s love is poured out into our hearts • Romans 5:1-5 • 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, • 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And weboast in the hope of the glory of God. • 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

  3. Our heart is Christ’s home • 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 • 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, • 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. • Ephesians 3:16-17 • 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, • 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

  4. Restoration of the temple: a history • 605 The Babylonian exile – Nebuchadnezzar • 559 Cyrus conquers Babylon: Persian empire starts. • 558 The edict: Jewish exiled may return home. • 537 Sheshbazzar appointed, starts building…but not finish. • 522 Darius • 520 Letter of Tatttenai, scroll of Cyrus found. • Prophets: Haggai & Zechariah. Rebuilding starts • 515 Temple finished • 486 Artaxerxes: Nehemiah rebuilds the Wall • Ezra 6:15 God and…Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes!

  5. What can we learn? • It took 22 years from Sheshbazzar 537 to the finish of • the temple 515. • Once started in earnest: just 5 years. 17 spoiled years! • Reasons: • I) The excuse of opposition, (yes…but) • II) Attitude of procrastinating. (not yet) • III) Putting your own “house” before God’s honour • IV) “Patch up” work: building on ruins (Nehemiah wept) • V) Deep dissatisfaction with life.

  6. Haggai: reasons illustrated. • Haggai 1 • 1 In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai toZerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest: • 2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD’s house.’”

  7. 3 Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: • 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” • 5 Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. • 6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

  8. Think about it… • 7 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways”. • I) Are my difficulties my excuse? • II) Do I procrastinate? (not yet) • III) Do I put my own “house” before God’s honor? • IV) Am I building on ruins? (Nehemiah's distress) • V) Am I dissatisfied with life because of failure? • 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD.
