Middle Mexico peoples that worshipped the feathered serpent and had their capital at Tula • They may have traded with the Anasazi people to the North in Chaco Canyon (turquoise trade) • There is some evidence they may have had contact with tribes as far north as the Mississippian cultures • The empire collapsed in 1150 When nomadic invaders from the North took control Toltecs

The Aztecs ruled after the anarchy cleared the way for their cities around lake Texcoco • 10,000 lived on the lake shores by 1325 in city states (Tenochtitlan Founded) • There were prince and princesses married to help unite the tribes • They were feared for their fighting skills, human sacrifices to gods, and acted as mercenaries • Aztec power grew and tributes was paid to them by their subjects • Montezuma II gained political and religious powers as godly representative Aztecs (Mexica)

Aztec religion had many Gods, (rain, corn, fire, wind, sky, sun, moon, etc.) at least 128 • With militarism human sacrifice became more prevalent • Ritual cannibalism was used to keep the people in order through fear, and their was fear of the earth being destroyed if the Gods were not honored (world destroyed 4 times before they taught) • Tenochtitlan was a heaven place on an island in the lake, that had a population of over 150,000, causeways and canoes were used to get to the city state Aztecs II

Many surrounding areas paid tribute in food (beans, corn, etc.), and they people used Chinampas for local crops • Gold dust and cacao bean were sometimes used as currency or they bartered in the markets for goods • The hierarchy divided society into nobles and the rest, over time the nobles created almost serf like conditions • The emperor ruled, advised by a prime minister, and a council of advisors Aztecs III
