  1. Turn in Unit 1 Word Find • Turn in by Thursday for credit.

  2. Today: Final reading of Unit 1! • 3 pages, four questions. • About how political parties nominate candidates. But first… Let’s talk about something controversial.

  3. The Electoral College What is it? • It’s not a school, it’s a meeting. • 538 electors meet after the general election to choose the president and VP. • To win election, candidates need 270 electors.

  4. In 2000, Al Gore ran against George W. Bush for president. • Bush got: 50,456,002 votes • Gore got: 50,999,897 votes Who won?

  5. Answer: Bush • WHY?

  6. Answer: “Winner takes all” • National popular vote doesn’t choose president. • Chosen state by state in “winner take all” elections that tell the electors who to vote for. • If you win a state, you win ALL of that state’s Electoral College votes.

  7. Bush lost popular vote, but won electoral college. • Bush: 271 electoral votes • Gore: 266 electoral votes

  8. Riddle (think, pair, share): • If advisories were like states in the electoral college… • Could a candidate for Student Government get more votes than anyone else -- and still lose? • How?

  9. Homework for tomorrow: • “Where do I vote?” online (get assignment when done reading today) • Finish terms.

  10. Task today: Groups of of 2-3, knee to knee, eye to eye. Read pp. 466-469. Answer questions 1-4 on p. 469 in notebook. Put definitions in your Terms. Then "quiz out" with teacher.
