  3. Recognising the need • The need for: • Control of quality of output • Predictability of service • Brand management • ISO accreditation • Improved management of resources • Drive out cost/ maximise value • Technology investment • Ensuring technology supports business need

Constructing a business case • Collect evidence to support the need: • What does it cost us do provide the service – where do we accumulate cost? • Where do we always have problems in delivering our service – how can we address these? • How can we deliver our service – faster/ better/ cheaper? • Define the business benefit and the cost of not improving the delivery of service

Resource implications • Need to recognise: • Ownership required from the top to the bottom of the organisation • People will need time out of service delivery to do the work required • There will be a direct cost to the business, not just a loss of fee earning revenues • The work needs management and co-ordination

  6. Alternative strategies • Paper based v Browser Based • Office products v System based • Passive v Interactive

  7. Paper is more immediate – easy to produce Very difficult to manage – costly to manage Danger of sitting on a shelf and not used Can be accessed from the computer ‘desktop’, or over the Internet. Easy to navigate through process charts – easy to link to other information Electronic requires technology – but if you have it – “it is a no brainer” Paper based v Browser based

  8. Office products – Word/ Excel/ PowerPoint/ Visio fragment the information Office products are easy to use Unable to re-use the information created in an Interactive system. Information needs to be re-entered for this. System based creates co-ordinated environment for the information System based an be complex to use Opportunity to be able to re-use information in an interactive system.   11. Passive uses hyperlinks to connect process diagrams and other information Passive does little to assist in compliance. Records of compliance have to be managed separately Passive process implementations are not management tools Interactive processes will trigger applications and web based forms to implement the process The interactive environment provides process control. It is the environment in which business is carried out. Records stored with the process Process performance can be monitored Passive v Interactive
