How Do You Get Your E-mail?(1) • e-mail은 SMTP(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)을 이용해서 인터넷을 통해 전달됨 • SMTP는 e-mail application과 메시지가 route에 의해 지나가는 모든 컴퓨터들에 의해서 처리됨 • Receiving Incoming Messages • e-mail을 받고 읽는 방법은 사용자가 인터넷에 접속하는 방법에 따라 다름 • 항상 인터넷에 접속해 있지 않다면 mail server로부터 e-mail을 download 받아야 함 • 항상 인터넷에 접속해 있다면 mail server에 e-mail이 존재하는 동안에는 읽을 수 있음

How Do You Get Your E-mail?(2) • mail server는 POP(Post Office Protocol) or POP3를 이용하여 mailbox에 e-mail을 받고 저장 • e-mail을 읽기 위해서는 e-mail application(mail client or POP client) 필요 • Sending Outgoing Message • e-mail application을 이용해서 메시지 작성 • SMTP server으로 메시지 전송 • ISP는 SMTP server와 POP server를 동시에 관리 • Ways of Accessing E-mail • mail client(Eudora, Outlook), Web-based e-mail, commercial provider(CompuServe, America Online), LAN, UNIX e-mail program(Pine, Elm, Mutt)

E-mail Addressing(1) • username@host or domain name • username에는 숫자, 밑줄, 마침표 등을 넣을 수 있지만쉼표, 빈칸, 괄호는 넣을 수 없음 • host or domain name은 mailbox의 위치 제공 • e-mail address에서 대문자는 보통 중요하지 않음 • e-mail address는 구두점(따옴표나 꺽쇠 괄호 등)을 포함하지 않음 • 대부분의 e-mail program은 e-mail address 주변에 angle bracket(<>)을 넣을 수 있게 함

E-mail Addressing(2) • More About Host names • host name은 최소한 2개의 파트로 구성됨 • host name은 2개 이상의 파트로 구성됨(computer name을 맨 앞에 넣을 수 있음) • 대부분 computer name을 뺸 e-mail address도 가능 • Special Addresses • 많은 domain들은 사용자들이 정보를 얻을 수 있는 특별한 e-mail address들을 제공함 • for instance, postmaster, info, webmaster and sysadmin

  6. E-mail Addressing(3) • Message Headers • 각각의 e-mail 메시지는 그 메시지에 대한 정보를 담은 header로 시작됨 • 보통 e-mail package에서는 자동으로 메시지 header를 보여 주지 않음 • 각각의 header는 type of header + colon + content of the header로 이루어짐 • X로 시작하는 header는 optional header

  9. Downloading E-mail • Working Offline 1. Connect to the Internet. 2. Download your e-mail. 3. Disconnect form the Internet. 4. Read your e-mail and write new messages. 5. Connect to the Internet. 6. Send your new messages and download any new messages. 7. Disconnect from the Internet. • Deleting Messages from the Server

E-mail Netiquette • Think twice before sending an emotional message. • Use the subject line well. • Don’t flame. • Check spelling and punctuation. • Watch the sarcasm. • Don’t send e-mail to people who don’t want it. • Don’t overquote, especially on mailing lists. • Don’t use all capitals or any other weird formatting. • Sent e-mail that everyone can read. • Don’t plagiarize. • Don’t pretend you’re someone else. • Don’t send frivolous messages. • Remember the law. • Don’t forward chain letter and other junk e-mail.

Formatted E-mail • formatting을 지원하는 e-mail 최근의 결과 • HTML : formatted with HTML tags, just like Web pages • Rich Text • MIME(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) : Formatting created just for e-mail. attachment에도 사용됨. • Microsoft Word Format : formatting can include any formatting that Word is capable of performing

Signatures and Stationery • Signature • 사용자의 이름이나, e-mail address와 다른 정보들을 사용자가 보내는 e-mail의 뒤에 나타나게 하기 위해서 많은 e-mail program들은 outgoing message의 뒤에 덧붙이는 파일인 signature를 생성하도록 함 • signature는 보통 네줄 정도가 적당 • Stationery • 거의 변화가 없는 메시지를 보낼때 stationery(e-mail form letters)를 이용 • 보통 e-mail program들은 사용자가 자주 보내는 메시지에 넣기를 원하는 header와 text로 이루어진 stationery file을 저장하여 사용할 수 있게 함.

  14. E-mail Attachments • 파일을 보내는 사용자의 e-mail program이 다른 타입의 파일을 text-like format으로 바꿔서 Internet mail system을 통해 전달 • 이 mail을 받는 e-mail program이 원래의 형태로 변환 • MIME : newest and best standard method for sending attachments • Uuencoding : 주로 UNIX e-mail program에서 사용됨 • BinHex : 주로 Mac e-mail에서 사용됨

  15. Web-Based E-mail(1) • 장점 • Web에 access할 수 있다면 자신의 컴퓨터 없이도 mail을 확인할 수 있음 • free • 단점 • 광고를 봐야 함 • security가 보통의 메일보다 보장되지 못함 • 종류 • Messages sent to a Web-only account • Messages stored in your POP mailbox

  16. Web-Based E-mail(2) • Web-based e-mail service를 선택할 때 고려해야 할 점 • Does it handle attachments? • Is it free? • Has it been in business long? • Does it provide the features you need? • How much space does it give you? • Does it support formatted messages? • Is it easy to use? • How fast is it?
