Current End of Life Education • MS1 Ethics of Clinical Medicine 1 Fall Semester- 2 Lectures Ethics- Dealt with end of life issues Complementary and Alternative Medicine- not focused on end of life care, but talked about comfort care: acupuncture, yoga, aromatherapy

Current End of Life Education • MS4 Palliative Care Elective- Four week rotation -Weekly lectures and meetings -Rounds at Downstate, VA Hospital in Brooklyn, and Calvary Hospital, the only fully accredited acute care hospital specializing in palliative medicine for cancer patients in the U.S.
The Wheels Are in Motion… • SUNY Downstate Medical Center is in the process of creating a palliative care consult team. • Dr. Ahronheim(my mentor) has been trying to get an elective or summer program started before I contacted her. • A class wide email I sent out yielded over 20 responses from people interested in a hands-on experience in end of life and palliative care.
The Wheels Are in Motion… • The student curriculum committee as well as some faculty have been notified that most students feel that more time must be devoted to end of life issues. • Also, I have kept a daily journal that I plan on sharing with peers and faculty when I return to New York.
The Game Plan • Fall MS2 elective/Spring MS1 elective -6 week elective -One meeting per week for 3 hours -5 to 6 students • Goals: • Gain clinical knowledge and experience in the many different aspects of End of Life and Palliative Medicine
The Game Plan • Goals (cont.) -Practice Communication Skills -Students will be asked to complete a journal and participate in a writing workshop about their experiences with death to help reflect on the rotation.
The Game Plan • Week 1 -Of Course, Food provided -3 Lectures: Intro to End of Life and Palliative Care, End of Life Ethical and Legal Issues: case studies Lecture on Pain Management and/or Communicating Bad News and Bereavement

In Conclusion • End of life care is one of the most important aspects of medicine, and yet Downstate as well as many other Medical Schools do not devote enough time and effort to thoroughly cover the subject. • My Project should give the students what they want: Hands on Experience with Caring for the Terminally Ill
