  1. My Special Number By Danielle D. 48

  2. Why did I choose this number? • I chose this number because if someone were that age, that person would almost be “Half-a-Centurion”. • 48 hours is the length of the weekend, my favourite part of the week!

  3. Mathematical facts on 48 • It is a composite number meaning it has more than 2 factors (the numbers multiply). • It is an even number (an even number is a multiple of 2). • It is the double of 24 (24X2=48). • Its prime factorization is 2X2X2X2X3 (longest factor string because all the factors are prime and a factor string is just a string of factors – it doesn’t matter how long it is – whose product is the desired number). • The Roman Numerals for 48 are XLVIII.

  4. Connections between the world and my number • 48 is four dozen- Dozens are used everyday, eg. If you owned a restaurant or bakery, one of the items on your grocery list could be something like four dozen eggs. • 48 is one third of a gross (144). • 48 hours is two full days (including day and night)- For example, if a patient is being treated with a new treatment in hospital, the doctors might say that the next 48 hours would be crucial to see whether the patient’s health would improve. • “48 Hours” is the name of a movie starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte… • … Guess what the sequel is… “Another 48 Hours”! • The founder of Buddhism sat under a Bo tree for 48 days to figure out life and his result was Buddhism.

  5. The Factor and Product Game The Factor Game -On a board of the numbers from 1- 30 the first player circles a number while the second player circles the proper factors (all a number’s factors except itself) and adds them up for their score. Player 1’s score is the number that they chose in the beginning. -Note: If a player chooses a number with no more factors open (all circled), that player loses a turn. The Product Game -The board has 36 numbers (products – answer to a multiplication problem) in chronological order with the number from 1- 9 below it (factors). Player 1 puts a paper clip on one of the factors. Player 2 puts the other paper clip on another factor and then circles the product of the two factors on the product board. Then Player 1 moves one of the paper clip and circles those two factors’ product and so on. Whoever gets four products in a row (diagonally, vertically, horizontally) wins the game.

  6. What did I learn about 48 from the Product and Factor Game? • We would need a special (larger) game board if the number 48 was in both games because their normal boards go up to a certain – eg. The Product Game goes up to 81 (9X9) and the Factor Game, to 30. • 48 would not be a good first move in the Factor Game because it is an abundant number meaning that its proper factors’ sum (the answer when numbers are added) is greater than itself. • If the number 48 was somewhere in the middle of the Product Game board it would be a good first move if you’re there, you can go line your numbers up anywhere, horizontally, vertically, diagonally, because you’ll have more space.

  7. Factor Pairs (factors that go together to make a number) of 48 • 1 and 48 make 48 • 2 and 24 “ “ • 3 and 16 “ “ • 4 and 12 “ “ • 6 and 8 “ “ • Its proper factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24 (proper factors are all the factor of a number except itself)

  8. Factor Pairs of 48 (CONTINUED) • You can also use 48’s factor pairs as dimensions when making a grid paper array (4 by 12 can be your instructions in an array) • All of these numbers can be divisors (the numbers that divide other numbers) or quotients (the answers) in a division problem Click on arrow for a quiz!
