  3. Text Purpose • I think the author wrote this book to inform. It is inform because the book is informing us all about how the slaves lived and the harsh treatment they received on a daily basis. The intended audience, in my opinion is adults and older teenagers because of the bad language.

  4. Text Structure • Mainly shows sequence of events and little cause and effect. It also shows little compare and contrast. It affects the way I read the book because if it didn’t have this text structure, major details would be taken away and there wouldn’t be any description or emotion involved, therefore changing how you feel about the book.

  13. Reading Response • “Then massa, he just take out his gun and shot her” page 55. This made me feel angry but sad because I just don’t understand how a person can do that to another person, it’s just horrifying. • “Deposit their dinner of cold bacon and corn cake” page 71 this made me feel sorry for the slaves because they are just treated with major cruelty. Cold bacon, all the work they’ve done and they get, cold bacon. • “Examine their teeth just like they was a horse” page 46 this made me feel mad because the thing they were compared to was an animal and they are humans and it’s just cruel to categorize them as an animal.
