HISTORIC BERGEN COUNTY, NJ Darlington School House, Mahwah Old Paramus Reformed Church From the days of colonial America to today, Bergen County, NJ , has played a pivotal role in local, state and American history. Original inhabitants were Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe. Early settlements were made by the Dutch, with numerous examples of Dutch architecture remaining today throughout the county. Historic New Bridge Landing on the borders of Hackensack, River Edge, and New Milford has three such houses, most famous of which is the Steuben House.. This house, located adjacent to the bridge at New Bridge Crossing, is said to have seen more of the American Revolution than any other house in colonial America Today there are over 200 buildings in Bergen County on the National Register of Historic Places and 8 Historic Districts listed.
