  2. Notice the context: • V. 14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: • Why was Paul writing these things? • So Timothy would know how to behave himself. • and • To tell Timothy that he was hoping to come to him in a little while (shortly)

V.15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. • 1.However, Paul says, if I can’t make it shortly,and I have to tarry longer, then you will know how to behave yourself • 2. Where? In the house of God. • What is the house of God? ‘the church of the living God”, which is the pillar and ground of the truth.

V.16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest(made kinown) in the flesh (Jesus) • justified in the Spirit.. • seen of angels (they held him) • Jesus was preached unto the Gentiles • Jesus was believed on in the world • Jesus was received up into glory. • No wonder the expression “Great is the mystery(that has been revealed) of godliness.

  5. We want to focus this morning onverse 15… • Paul wrote to Timothy so that he might know how to behave himself …

Timothy: This is how you ought to behave…and teach it to others. • The word "behave" would involve one's example both in and out of the assembly. • What is our conduct during the worship service and the example we set on the outside of the assembly? • What is the truth about the worship, • The organization, the work of the church of the Lord. ? • This morning we want to talk about • Behavior in and out of the assembly.

  7. Various translations of this verse • American King James Version • “But if I tarry long, that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God… • American Standard Version • “But if I tarry long, that you mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God

  8. Basic English Translation (BBE) • But if I am long in coming, this will make clear to you what behaviour is right for men in the house of God,the pillar and base of what is true.

  9. World English Bible • I Tim. 3:15 “But if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Christians worship together • John 4:23,24 • In I Cor. 3:9 Paul speaks of us as being ‘labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry,ye are God’s Building.. • Eph. 2:13 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.

  11. Christians are in business with God! • We are building with God. • Paul called himself a wise masterbuilder who laid a foundation. • I Cor. 3:9-11 …I have laid the foundation, and another builded thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereon…

  12. I Cor. 3:11,16 • “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” • If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereon he shall receive a reward…. • V.16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

  13. God Wants Every member of His Spiritual Household to know • How to Behave

  14. Eph. 4:1-3 • “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith y are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” • Christians are to ‘walk worthy”. • Be people who are possess lowliness and meekness, being longsuffering with each other, forbearing one another in love, • Seeking always to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

  15. That’s How we are to Behave! • 1. We MUST take assembling with God • Seriously! • We are to worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:23,24 • We are to come together to worship. • Acts 20:7 • We are …”behave ourselves”…

  16. The Assembly of God is a veryserious time in our lives • Psalms 89:7 • God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about Him!

  17. Time stated when we will cometogether with God • 1. To Study the Bible. 2 Tim. 2:15; John 5:39,40; • Not a time to study Politics, not a time set aside to play, to sleep, to whisper , to be • Running around….God’s Word is the center of our attention. • Are you habitually late? Do you get • Here on time? Remember you are assembling with God…HE IS HERE!!

  18. To Worship • To Pray. Acts 2:42; I Thess. 5:17; • To Sing. Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16 • To Eat the Lord’s Supper on lst day of the week. Acts 20:7 • To give of our means. I Cor. 16:1,2 • To Hear the Word of God preached. 2 Tim. 4:2-4

  19. 10:45 a.m. God is present…where are you? • If everyone got here when you do, who would be here at 10:45? • Sunday night: • 1. Children’s Drill Class. 4:45..Are your children here? • 2. Worship. 5:00 p.m. Are you here?

  20. Wed. night …. 7:00 p.m. • God wants everything to be done • ‘decently and in order”….I Cor. 14:40

  21. Have we become lax, or really don’t care? • ..Sometimes you cannot help but be late… • Something beyond control. • But other times, are we just plain guilty • Of not taking the appointment we have with God seriously. • I really need to work on this! It is so easy to fall into a habit of being late!

  22. How are we behaving? • Is God pleased with you? Is He pleased • With me? • Isa. 66:1,2 The One who is high and holy is looking for those who will tremble at His Word…Listen to these 2 verses:

  23. Isa. 66:1,2 • Thus saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been , saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.!”

  24. Heb. 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Since Christ is over God’s house, then we need to be sure that we ‘behave ourselves” in the house of God!

  25. We are offering to God a service, devotion, reverence… • I Pet. 2:5 Ye also,as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” • We are to ‘behave ourselves” so that we may offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to • God by Jesus Christ!!

  26. A Warning from God: • I Pet. 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? • Where does God’s judgment start? • With us! ‘the house of God”… Yes, Judgment is coming…We must behave ourselves!

  27. Can we , as the church of Christ, just do anything that we want to? • Can we just do anything in the name of religion and think that will please God? • Heb. 11:6 • NO

  28. Listen to what God said through Micah.. • Micah 6:6-8 “Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good: and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

  29. Just as He showed Israel , so He hath shown us… • …that thou mightest know how that oughtest to behave in the house of God…” • We know, because God has ‘showed us”!

  30. God hath shown us how to behave in and out of the assembly!

  31. We know how to behave in our personal lives….

  32. Illustration: • In the 1960’s, liberal ideas about sex were introduced. • 1. Sex outside of marriage…to some, that’s okay. • 2. Open marriages..okay to have sex with other partners.

  33. Fast Forward to today: 2012 • Some people will say just about anything you want to do is okay as far as sex is concerned! • “Is that how we are to behave?” • 1. Sex with animals • 2. Sex with same sex • 3. Sex with siblings (50 year old having sex with 12 year old daughter (son). • If marriage is not between One man and One Woman, then the door is wide open! • Matt. 19:9; Heb. 13:4

  34. We have to Behave ourselves! • Phil. 1:27 • Heb. 13:5,6 • Prov. 3:5,6

  35. We all need to learn how to behave ourselves • In Bible Study • In Worship • In our everyday life. • God has given us a pattern to follow, and • Paul was writing to Timothy so he would • Know What to do, How to do it, Where, • How and When.

  36. We only have this life to prepare for the Great Assembly before God! • Amos 4:12 “Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, • PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD, O ISRAEL! • Isaiah told Hezekiah: “Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live!. Isa. 38:1

  37. We are going down the Valley one by one…. • Are we behaving ourselves before the • God that we shall meet? • Acts 17:30,31 ..
