  2. Live Above The Influence By: Priyenka Khatiwada

  3. Imagine driving in the middle of the night and seeing your speedometer like this…..

  4. And the next thing you know……

  5. If you are under the age of 21 and your blood alcohol level is above a .0%you have to live with the consequences of a DWIwhich are not glamorous regardless of what the media shows you.

  6. The Real Effects of a DWI • Up to $2,000 in fines • Up to 2 years in jail • DWI school requirement • Your insurance goes up • Possible community service time • Substance abuse assessment • Possible vehicle impoundment • Possible ignition interlock device • If you get a DUI or DWI under the age of 21, your license will be suspended for 1 full year.

  7. Or Worse…. Every 22 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident.

  8. The truth behind Drunk Driving accidents • It’s like releasing a bullet into a crowd of people. You don’t know who you will hurt or kill. • While you may not be killed, you could face severe injuries that could leave you mentally or physically handicapped for the rest of your life. • If you don’t hurt yourself, would you be able to live with the guilt of hurting someone else or even killing them?

  9. Don’t Let This Be You

  10. How likely is it that this could happen to me? • An estimated 5.8 percent of 16 or 17 year olds and 15.1 percent of 18 to 20 year olds reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year. • In 2010, 211 children were killed in drunk driving crashes. • In 2010 there were almost 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving each day. Every 22 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident.

  11. YOU MUST KNOW…. • The average person metabolizes alcohol at the rate of about one drink per hour. Only time will sober a person up. Drinking strong coffee, exercising or taking a cold shower will not help. • Impairment is not determined by the type of drink, but rather by the amount of alcohol ingested over a specific period of time. • No amount of alcohol is “safe” to consume before driving.

  12. Stories Speak Louder Than Statistics • On May 20, 2012 Takunda Mavima was driving home from a graduation party when the effects of alcohol caused him to lose control of him car and crash into an off-ramp killing the other two passengers in the car: Tim See, 17, and Krysta Howell, 15. • Although Takunda received the forgiveness of the victim’s families, he will have to live with the guilt of killing two people for the rest of his life. • So please remember never get behind the steering wheel after drinking; you could destroy the lives of so many, or it may just be the last thing you ever do. TakundaMavima on the right and his attorney.
