  2. Two of the most popular 20th century designers are Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) Frank Lloyd Wright (1887-1959)

Characteristics of Marcel Breuer Style • Influenced by the Bauhaus philosophy of “form follows function” (objects should be designed according to the function they have to perform) • He is known for his contemporary design with clean lines • Used tubular steel frames with canvas, cane, wood, or leather seats • Most famous design was the Wassily Chair.

Characteristics of Frank Lloyd Wright Style • His style is described as organic • He is known for his Prairie style of architecture that “fit” into the surroundings • He designed furniture to blend with each of his house designs • Commonly used horizontal lines, geometric shapes, flat surfaces, and slats.
