  1. Collection Building Tools: Contributing to the NSDL NSDL Annual Meeting October 18-20, 2006

  2. Metadata Repository (MR) Methods • Essentially done with OAI via • Pathways • Generate own metadata with CWIS or other tools • Early on NSDL scraped websites • Recommend a Resource

  3. NDR Approaches (1) • OAI – still okay • DLESE Collection System – cataloging tool communicating with NDR API • Middle School Portal Data Management System – resource-centric data manager and cataloging tool • iVia – processes website content to auto-generate metadata then submit to NDR • On Ramp – distributed creation/editing of content

  4. NDR Approaches (2) • Expert Voices – blogging tool integrating NSDL resources • Instructional Architect – discover, select and design instruction from NSDL for NSDL • Content Assignment Tool (CAT) – suggests standards for resources • Recommend a Resource – provide a URL • Other Tools – CWIS, etc.

  5. Tools for this Session • DLESE Collection System (DCS) • Middle School Portal Data Management System (MSP DMS) (More detail in a few slides)

  6. Activity: Manage Collections The ability and methods used to manage collections in the NDR are still under development. What kinds of activities/workflows do you use to manage collections? (less about tools and scripts) Examples: • DLESE aggregates many collections and therefore needs to know which metadata record belongs to which collection • DLESE needs to know if a URL of a resource belongs to more than one collection

  7. DLESE Collection System (DCS): Highlights • Multiple built-in metadata formats • DLESE, NSDL_DC, OAI_DC • Works with and validates across different XML schemas • Handles multiple collections in multiple formats simultaneously • Create different workflows for each collection • Writes directly to the NDR API • Platform independent and web accessible • OAI is embedded • Secure access if needed

  8. Middle School Portal Data Management System (MSP DMS): Highlights • Metadata can come from multiple sources – OAI, iVia, directly from collections • All metadata for a unique ID (URL) is viewable in the same space • Web based cataloging tool • Assign the same resource to multiple projects • Projects provide template of fields they want • Records are built from existing metadata – pick and choose (or add your own) • Records are exported in multiple formats

  9. Demonstrate Tools • DLESE Collection System (DCS) http://preview.dlese.org/schemedit • Middle School Portal Data Management System (MSP DMS) Beta version available for testing
