  1. Office 365 Advanced Scenario:Unified Messaging Michael Wilson Program Manager Lead Microsoft Corporation 8-Mar-2011

  2. Exchange UM Online: Executive Summary • Hosted voice mail • Call answering • Outlook Voice Access • Automated Attendant • Requires “dial tone” from customer’s telephony solution • Lync and compatible PBXs • Part of some Office 365 Enterprise Plans

  3. UM Online Feature Set • Same as Exchange 2010 SP1 UM (on-prem), except… • No speech access to the directory • Say “Directory” in Outlook Voice Access, switches to DTMF mode • “Find messages from User Name” command not available • Automated Attendants are all DTMF-only • Speech access to personal contacts is still supported • No *-UMServer or Get-UMActiveCalls cmdlets • Server objects are not visible in a multitenant environment • No Test-UMConnectivity cmdlet • Replaced by the UM Troubleshooting Tool (see Exchange Blog)

  4. Connecting to UM Online: Microsoft Lync • Lync Server required • OCS not supported • Edge role required • All roles must be Lync (no OCS) • New: Hosted Voice Mail Policy • Lync voice mail routing can send calls to UM Online, as well as to UM on customer premises • Can mix on-prem and hosted voice mail for Lync users • Lync (Enterprise Voice) here is still on-prem, not Online

  5. Connecting to UM Online: PBXs and IP PBXs • Customer premises equipment • Session Border Controller (SBC) • VoIP Gateway (if not IP PBX) • Similar interoperability story (compared to UM on-prem) • UM Telephony Advisor • Lists PBXs, IP PBXs, Gateways • Adding content for SBCs • SBCs act as transparent VoIP proxies and firewalls

  6. Connecting to UM Online: General Process On-Premises Online

  7. What’s Interoperable with UM Online? • Microsoft Unified Communications Solutions • Microsoft Lync™ Server 2010 (Enterprise Voice) • Other Solutions • PBXs, VoIP Gateways and IP PBXs • Listed at the Exchange 2010 UM Telephony Advisor pages • Systems Integrators may be able to support unlisted products • Session Border Controllers (as of Mar 2011)

  8. When Will UM Online be Available? • In Office 365 (Exchange Online): staged introduction • Requires Exchange Online Plan 2 (Office 365 Plans E3 or E4) • UM-enabling user will fail unless appropriate license was applied • Plan to make available in all Office 365 regions, over time: • UM will not be offered for users with certain country-of-origin values (list subject to review): Ecuador, Guatemala, India, Nigeria, Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uruguay * Certificate Authority restrictions may apply: consult private beta documentation

  9. Frequently Asked Questions • My company is already using Exchange UM. What happens if we move the mailboxes to Exchange Online? Migration of UM-enabled mailboxes is supported. However, unless rich coexistence between on-prem and Online organizations is used, at a minimum the UM PIN will be reset when the mailbox is moved. There will be some on-prem configuration required to ensure that call forwarding to voice mail goes to UM Online, but voice mail downtime should be minimal.

  10. Frequently Asked Questions • My company is already using another unified messaging solution that works with Exchange (e.g. Cisco Unity, Avaya Modular Messaging). What happens if we move the mailboxes to Exchange Online? That’s really a question for the other unified messaging vendor. Current versions of these products won’t work directly with Exchange Online mailboxes. However, you may be able to use SMTP to forward voice messages (created on-prem) to the appropriate cloud mailboxes, with an inferior user experience.

  11. Frequently Asked Questions • My company is using Microsoft Lync for Enterprise Voice, but some of our users also have older PBX phones on their desks. We are planning to subscribe to Office 365. Can we use UM Online for voice mail for all users? Yes, if you buy the correct Office 365 Enterprise Plan, and the PBX is supported by Exchange UM. It’s even possible to use a single Exchange Online mailbox to take voice mail for a user who uses Lync, but also has an old-style PBX phone.

  12. Frequently Asked Questions • My company is in Europe. Will the voice-over-IP communications between the telephony solution on our premises and Exchange Online UM stay within European networks? Yes. Although there is no explicit mention of geographical regions in the UM Online host names, the DNS resolution of these names is sensitive to the requesting IP address and will direct all traffic to the appropriate region.

  13. Frequently Asked Questions • My company uses an on-premises fax solution with Exchange UM. Will this continue to work if we move the mailboxes to Office 365? Some online fax services are compatible with Exchange UM. Will these also work if UM is Online? We’re testing these scenarios at the moment. In principle, both on-premises and hosted fax services should work with Exchange Online UM, if they are interoperable with UM on-prem. Full details will be published when testing is complete.

  14. Summary • Exchange Unified Messaging: Software and Online Service • Software: Exchange 2010 SP1 UM • Service: Exchange UM Online • Feature set of service almost identical to on-premises version • Customer must have “dial tone” provided on their premises • Lync Server 2010 or UM-compatible PBX (VoIP Gateway if needed) • Lync Edge Server or UM-compatible Session Border Controller • Available to users in most countries offering Office 365
