  1. The Second Line Of Defence Rachel Payne

  2. If the first line of defence, the skin fails, there is a secondary line of defence to protect your body These are made up of different types of white blood cells

  3. Neutrophils Neutrophils attack bacteria They are like soldiers on a battlefield that rush to the enemy but get killed easily • They develop in bone marrow and only live a few days before self-destructing

  4. T Helper Cells Each T helper marks each type of pathogen They mark each pathogen and give signals for other cells T helper cells are like bosses

  5. Cytotoxic T Cells They punch holes in the walls of pathogen cells so the contents ooze out These are the killer cells

  6. Macrophages Means ‘big eater’ These cells clean up the mess of dead cells

  7. Dendritic Cells These are like spies If they find an invading pathogen they bring back evidence to the T helper cells

  8. B Cells They produce antibodies which lock onto the antigen of invading bacteria

  9. Suppressor T Cells Once the infection is gone, the white blood cells need to calm down to prevent getting damaged. The suppressor cells slow down or turn off the immune system
