What is Biomedical Engineering? • “Biomedical engineering integrates physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences and engineering principles to study biology, medicine, behavior, and health. It advances fundamental concepts; creates knowledge from the molecular to the organ systems level; and develops innovative biologics, materials, processes, implants, devices and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health” • Source: Biomedical Engineering Society, www.bmes.org/default.asp. Course Outline • CHEE 340 is designed to provide a survey of many of the aspects of biomedical engineering. • The course has been organized as follows: • Anatomy and Physiology • Biomedical Transport Phenomena (Mass and Heat) • Biomaterials • Biomechanics • Tissue Engineering/Regenerative Medicine CHEE 340

Problem Sets and Tutorials • Study problem sets are not marked: • Objective is to aid in understanding material • Solutions will be posted weekly • Tutorials: • Run by the TA (s) • Review of material and/or a problem posed and answered in class • Tutorial problems/slides will be posted ahead of time. Solutions to problems covered in tutorial will not be posted. CHEE 340

Assessment of Understanding • Midterm Exams (2 x 25%) 50 % • Held during class time (1.5 h each) • Midterm 1: Oct 9th, 2013 • Midterm 2: November 6th, 2013 • Final Exam 50 % • Equation sheets are permitted for exams: • a singlesheet of 8.5" x 11" paper • text can be on both sides • only equations and variable defintions and values for constants are allowed • must be written in ink • must be handed in with the exam CHEE 340
