  1. 24 Hour Clock Telling Time Part 2 Deutsch 1

  2. What is it? • a.ka. the military time. • schedules for trains, buses, T.V., radio shows, and other official events use the 24-hour clock • also differentiates between the a.m. the p.m—don’t need it when you use the 24-Uhr

  3. In German… • The hour and minutes are separated by a period, not a colon. • z.B.  13.00 = 1 PM • When writing the official time, state the hour, then the minutes past the hour  never use “nach”, “vor”, or “halb” or “Viertel” • z.B  • 13.20 = Es ist 13 Uhr 20. • 18.50 = Es ist 18 Uhr 50.

  4. The conversions… • When using the 24-hour clock, you count from 1 to 24 (the first hour of the day is 1 Uhr, the 17th hour is 17 Uhr) • Add the number of the hour to 12 to get the military time. • 1 = 13 7 = 19 • 2 = 14 8 = 20 • 3 = 15 9 = 21 • 4 = 16 10 = 22 • 5 = 17 11 = 23 • 6 = 18 12 = 0/24

  5. To convert back to standard time… • Subtract 12 • z.B. Es ist 19 Uhr. --12 =7:00 Therefore, 23.00 = 11 pm. If it were 11 am, it would be written as 11.00 Es ist 9 Uhr using the 24 Uhr would be a.m., but 9 Uhr at night would have to be 21 Uhr.

  6. More examples… To say 1:30 p.m. using the 24 Uhr it would be…. 13.30 (Es ist 13 Uhr dreißig.) To say 5:45 p.m. using the 24 Uhr, it would be … 17.45 (Es ist 17 Uhr fünfundvierzig)

  7. 24/0 23 13 12 11 1 22 14 10 2 8:25 p.m Would be 20.25 7:40 pm Would be 19.40 3:15 p.m. Would be 15.15 6:30 a.m. Would be 6.30 . 9 21 15 3 8 4 20 16 7 5 17 6 19 18

  8. Let’s Practice! • Convert the following times to the 24-hour/military time!
