  4. Jamestown • Swamp Land • Three Sides Protected by Water-- afraid of an attack by the Spanish • Far enough inland • Deep enough waters right off shore to dock ships • Fort James Town 1608

  5. SWAMP=MOSQUITOS • MOSQUITOS=MALARIA • Therefore, • SWAMP=DEATH PROBLEMS! • No fresh water source • & • Refused to Plant any Crops

  7. Supply 1: January 1608 • Brought Supplies and 70 more colonists

  8. Supply 2: October 1608 • Brought more supplies, a few women, and non-English artisans

  9. By 1611 1,200 sent to Jamestown. Less than half will survive.
