  2. Interviewing • Application forms and resumes serve the purpose of making an employer interested in you. • Then they will interview you. • You need a successful plan for a successful interview.

Three Steps for a Successful Interview • Preparing for an Interview (Step 1) • You will never have a second chance to make a first impression • Dress and Grooming • Women - Suit, dress, nylons, medium heeled shoes • Men - Suit and tie • Dress can also depend on the job that you are interviewing for.

  4. Step 1 - Dress Continued • Hair • Women - Pull it back neatly. • Men - Clean shave and hair cut • Jewelry - Too much can be distracting

Step 1 - Things to Know • Need to find out information about the company. • Products they sell • Advertising techniques they have used • How long they have been in business. • Know the name and of interviewer and time of appointment • Read your resume several times before going in - work experience, education • Practice interview questions and get feedback

Step 2 - Conducting Yourself in an Interview • Go alone • Arrive 15 minutes early to interview • Be polite to the secretaries • Bring extra copies of your resume • Shake hands with interviewer • Remain standing until asked to sit down • Do not put anything on interviewers desk • Make eye contact and do not chew gum. • Relax!!!!!!

  7. Step 3 - What to Say in an Interview • Answer each question honestly • Two questions of difficulty: • 1. What type of work would you like to do? • Be specific in your answer!!!!!! • 2. What wage or salary do you expect? • You could turn the question around on them. • Do research of position!!!

  8. Step 3 - What to Say (con’t) • Ask Questions Yourself! • Makes you look more interested • Opportunities for advancement • When will I be notified if I am hired? • What are the hours of work?

  9. Step 4 - Closing the Interview • May be offered job on the spot • More likely, will be told that a decision will be made later • Ask any last minute questions • Shake hands again • Thank them for interview • Thank secretary on way out

  10. Step 5 - Follow up the Interview • Evaluate your own performance • Telephone five or six days after the interview - the interviewer will know you are still interested. • Thank you letter
