INTRODUCTION • A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a legally constituted organization created by legal person that operates independently from any government • All kinds of private organizations that are independent from government control can be recognized as NGO • The number of NGOs are estimated to be 10.2 million in which the number of professional raisers are less then 1%.

  3. TYPES OF NGOs NGO type by orientation • Charitable orientation; • Service orientation; • Participatory • Empowering orientation; NGO type by level of co-operation • Community- Based Organization; • City Wide Organization; • National NGOs; • International NGOs;

NGOs OPERATING INTERNATIONALLY Some of the Famous terms used for NGO are • BINGO – It is a short term used for business-friendly international NGO • CSO – It is short term for civil society organization • DONGO – It refers to the Donor Organized NGO • ENGO – It is an abbreviated form of environmental NGO • GONGO – It refers to the government-operated NGOs • INGO – It is an abbreviated form of international NGO

  5. ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY NGO’s • SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT This include both municipal solid waste and bio-medical wastes. Civic exnoras play a major role in assisting the municipal corporation in the collection of garbage from individual households • ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT NGO’s have now started focusing its efforts on the concept of ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT by which practically all wastes can be converted into wealth through recycling

  6. CONTINUE……. WATERWAYS MONITORING PROGRAMME (WAMP) This programme was started with the sole purpose of developing clean and pollution free water ways in cities . COMMUNITY SANITATIO IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS Inadequate sanitation facilities are a major problem to human health, especially so in the neglected low- income areas and slum settlements. NGO’s concept of self- help is best displayed by the community sanitation improvement projects in these areas.

RULES &REGULATION CREATED BY THE INDIAN GOVERMENT • Noise pollution The Ministry and Forests has notified the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules,2000 under the Environment (Protection) Act1986, for prevention and control of noise pollution in the country of environment . • The sources of Air Pollution are Industries, vehicular emission are another source of air pollution . The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 has classified the industries as red, orange and green depending on the degree of pollution caused by them

  8. Continue….. • Water pollution--the rivers of India are part of its cultural heritage. The quality of the water has deteriorated due to the uncontrolled release of enffluen programmes related to cleaning of rivers by industries into the rivers. • A National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), which includes second phase of GAP also, has been formulated which aims to control the pollution of grossly polluted rivers of the country. • A National River Conservation Authority has been setup to review the implementation of the programmes related to cleaning of rivers .

NGO’s Role in pollution control • Paryavaran Vahinis have been constituted in 184 districts involving the local people to play an active role in preventing deforestation and environmental pollution. 4000 NGOs have been given financial assistance for creating environmental awareness. • An Environmental Information System (ENVIS) network has been setup to disseminate information on environmental issues. India has a large network of NGO’s,which are involved in spreading the message of sustainable development to the public.

CAF: An organization providing financial help to NGO’s • CAF India's vision is to create a sustainable voluntary sector with resources contribute by relationships built on trust between NGOs and donors. • CAF India has pioneered corporate community initiatives with several companies in India. • CAF India has a registered public charitable trust, exempt under Indian tax laws, and it has offices in Delhi and Bangalore.

BENEFITS OF NGOs • SOURCES OF EMPLOYMENT • When an NGO sets up its offices in a particular country or location, they will need to employ people to show them around, translate as well as work in their offices. • IMPROVES STANDARDS OF LIFE • Unlike the government, NGOs are able to penetrate all corners of the community to find out what kind of problems people face and what they can do to make things better. • REDUCE LITERACY LEVELS • NGOs also teach people in the respective communities how to lead a better life than they do right now. While some run free education, others teach people basic knowledge that can help them get jobs and earn money.

OBJECTIVES OF NGOs • To promote environmental sustainability through education and community participation. • To build the capacity of member organizations and the secretariat. • To conduct research on environmental issues. • To facilitate interaction and cooperation with national and international agencies. • To promote community development and sustainable use of natural resources. • To ensure adherence to environmental treaties and conventions through policy advocacy.

  13. METHODS OF NGO’s PUBLIC RELATIONS NGOs focuses a lot on maintaining the healthy relationships with the public for meeting their goals. PROJECT MANAGEMENT Project management is being employed by the NGOs to carry out their projects successfully. NGOs work for community or environmental issues. These NGOs are designed to work for large number of issues including humanitarian affairs, religion.

  14. What we can do for the protection of Environment • To Support the NGO’s financially which are rendering service to the Health and Environment sector. • To plant and grow trees in the house garden. • Not to waste water for various purposes. • We should minimize the use plastic cover for different purposes. • Educate the students about the pollution problem and the harmful effects of pollution. • To support the initiates taken by the central and state government in protecting our environment.

  15. conclusion The total number of NGOs in the country is about 70,000; while the actual number might be in lakh, the number of the registered NGOs may not be more than 10,000. Commercialisation of NGOs has no doubt led to their rapid growth but it does not mean that every one joining the field is coming because of money only.
