  2. Purpose • Deal with unique waste stream • Redistribute usable materials for reuse • Retrieve residence hall recycling containers • Provide money for student scholarships • Interactive way to educate people about reuse • Provide a service to our community

  3. Communications • It sells itself, word of mouth • University Relations, press releases • Student Newsletter: Installment • Bins with conspicuous signage in every dorm lobby • Giving Housing folks heads up, maintaining communication

  4. Too much of a good thing? • Greensboro Community anticipates sale • Big line, frenzy at opening • “Regulars” have developed strategies to give them the upper hand • Ways to even the playing field: • Departmental Discipline • Clear Communication • Don’t choose favorites

  5. Over Two Weeks of Fun! • Label 95 gallon rollcarts, lug food containers • Distribute two rollcarts and one food container to 22 residence halls • Prepare sorting space • Daily collection of containers on box truck • Container juggling • Sorting, sorting, sorting • 2 day sale • Deliver remnants to G.U.M.

  6. Heave, Ho • Rollcarts can hold about 200lbs. of stuff • Not everything fits nicely into a container • Constant clean-up • Hydraulic Lift, indeed a blessing

Making sense of the mess • Men’s and Women’s Tops • Men’s and Women’s Bottoms • Shoes • Electronics • Books (Better World Books) • Non-perishable food • Dorm Recycling Bags • Miscellaneous- TV’s, DVD Players, CD’s, curling irons, bean bag chairs, couches, futons, linens, toys, Grandma’s gifts, crutches

  8. The Sale • After Graduation • In large central area easily accessible to public and has own loading dock • Laying the ground rules with the veterans • All day affair • Pricing Strategies

  9. Everyone comes out ahead! • Over 7.5 tons collected last year • Over $1300 raised • Over 250lbs. of food donated • Less bulky and totally good items clogging dumpsters • Safer and fairer than dumpster diving • Has become well anticipated campus event • We buy less clothing and other random things
