Any student can benefit from starting his or her path to a UC/CSU degree at a California Community College Students choosethe transfer path for many reasons: Haven’t decided on academic or career goals and want to explore Haven’t met requirements for freshman admission and want additional academic preparation Aren’t ready or able to leave home Want the affordability of community colleges Unsatisfied with four-year originally selected

Best Advice and Tips for CC Success • #1 Improve college readiness • Take math all four years in high school • Take advantage of early assessments • #2 Research your options • Not all CCCs offer the same programs or opportunities • Visit www.assist.org • #3 Enroll in community college on time! • Competition for CCC courses in increasing • The CCC matriculation process has several steps that should be completed during spring semester of 12th grade • #4 Attend full time, work part time • Three strong predictors for success: • Full-time enrollment • Continuous enrollment • Work no more than 15 hours per week • #5 Decide on a major and campus no later than sophomore year at CC • Know which UC/CSU campus(es) and major(s) you want to target and which have transfer guarantee programs

University of California Minimum Entrance Requirements • Top 12.5 % academically of high school graduates statewide • Minimum GPA is 3.0 in A-G courses • Completed 15 UC prescribed high school courses (a-g list). • SAT or ACT (SAT subject tests are optional) • Personal Statement included on application • No letter of recommendation required or allowed

UC Personal Statement Essay • Applicants are asked to respond to two prompts: • Describe the world you come from—for example, your family, community or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. • Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are? • Word Count: 1,000 words total

Personal Statement • An opportunity for applicants to provide information that supports and enhances review process • Adds clarity, richness and meaning to application and completes the application • Enables applicant to make the best possible case for admission • An admission decision is never based on the content of the personal statement alone

  14. Additional Comments Section • Use Additional Comments box for clarification, expansion of important details: • Additional names • Visa issues • Planned IB exams • Describe anything else that you have not had the opportunity to include • 500-word limit

UC’s Admissions Testing Requirement • ACT With Writing • ENGISH, MATH, READING, SCIENCE, WRITING • COMPOSITE SCORE BETWEEN 1-36 • OR • SAT Reasoning Test • CRITICAL READING, MATH AND WRITING • SCORE RANGE 200-800 PER SUBTEST TOTAL = 2400 • SAT Subject Tests, • No longer required but certain programs on some campuses recommend them, • also you can use subject tests to satisfy some of the "a-g" requirements

  20. Independent Colleges & Universities www.aiccu.edu • 120 independents in California • 100’s more nationwide • Costs range from $7, 000 to $50,000 • Most require SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing • Some more selective schools require 2 or more SAT Subject tests

Common Application • Currently accepted at 400 schools • Check your colleges for any required supplemental forms at the Common Application website • Application for Undergraduate Admission • Secondary School Report (filled out by school counselors) • Mid-Year Report (same as above) • Two Teacher Evaluations (to be filled out by teachers in academic subjects) • Essay 500 words • Short Answers 150 words • Students should check their application status regularly and gently remind teachers and counselors when deadlines are approaching.

  22. Application information • Gather your information • Research your major options • Apply broadly • Pick an e-mail address and stick with it. • Take a virtual tour or a real tour! • Pursue all potential scholarships

Deadline Options for private schools • Regular Decision- “I am interested, and if accepted, I might want to attend.” • Early Action- “ I am very interested, and if accepted, I will mostly attend.” • Early Decision- “ It’s true love, and if accepted, I must attend because it is contractually binding.” • Early Action/Single Choice- “I’m very interested, and you’re the one and only school I may apply to early.” (non-binding)

  24. PAYING FOR COLLEGE • Financial Aid Night – December 10 @ 6:30pm • Do the FAFSA after January 1st – Attend FAFSA workshops for help • Apply for scholarships – Refer to the Husky Pays Scholarship Booklet and newsletters where you will find a list of available scholarships
