Examples in Literature • “He observed as the Arab ran his life as though it were a game of chess.” (Exodus: page 228) denotation: He viewed Arab life similar to a game of chess. connotation: He was just as intrigued by Arab life as he was to a game of chess. • “It is over 300 hard cold miles to the port of Odessa.” (Exodus: page 208) denotation: It will be a chilly journey. connotation: It will be a cruel, bitter journey • “In a few years in this place she would age before her time.” (Exodus: page 586) denotation: She would grow old and weak before it was her time. connotation: She will learn things that should take many more years and become very mature. She would age intellectually.

  5. Analysis • The purpose of the author inserting conotations and denotations into the text is so the reader will need to retrace what they just read. The connotation is the simplest form, but because the reader might feel there is another meaning he/she will reread and discover the denotation. • In the first quote, connotation and denotation were used to briefly exhibit that Arab life was a very unique thing, probably complex as well. • In the second quote, the two literary tools are used to not only reveal how long and far the journey will be, but also the reader will sense the roughness and drudgery of the journey. • In the third quote, connotation and denotation are utilized to explain what kind of toll a place of tough labor can take upon a person- both mentally and physically.
