Career Consultation • 45 minute appointments with the careers adviser for your department to explore careers issues in depth • Monday to Friday • Book in advance • by telephone or in person • During October, unless you have already had a consultation, you need to book a Quick Advice appointment first before being referred for a Career Consultation You do not need to know what you want to do after graduation to have a career consultation!

  29. Graduate Training Schemes • Vary from company to company. There isn’t one model of GTS • Aim to recruit and train high calibre graduates into a specific function e.g. (Technology/ Analyst/ Advisory) who will become managers in the future • Large organisations usually recruit several graduates • Training normally last between 1 and 3 years • Often involve different placements within a function or across departments /functions • Job specific training/qualifications alongside leadership courses • GTS are often advertised early – September onwards, but some companies will recruit all year round e.g. KPMG

  30. Job Search Strategy • Which type of work do you want to apply for? • Research career areas - Is X a good career choice for you? Will you like it? Are you suited to it? Do you have the skills/competencies/experience? • Which employers recruit into the careers you are interested in? • Research company profiles • When and how do they recruit? • When should you apply for jobs? • Some employers start the recruitment process early in the autumn term e.g. finance, pharmaceutical, engineering and advertising • SMEs often recruit at a later stage or when vacancies arise • Check deadlines. All year round recruitment in some cases • Do you have the time to apply for jobs? What are the implications if you wait to apply after you have graduated? • How should you apply for jobs? • Online application form or targeted CV with covering letter – as specified by each employer

Applying for ‘Taught’ Postgrad Study • Find out what’s available at Loughborough • - see website and/or postgraduate prospectus • Explore what’s available elsewhere – use www.prospects.ac.uk • - then look at websites, attend open-days and collect prospectuses • Find out closing dates (often after Christmas but check as some are early) • Applications made one at a time on university form • - can apply for as many as you like • Look into costs and sources of funding, if any 35
