CYSTIC FIBROSIS (CF) Widespread disease (1 / 2 500 live births) Monogenic & Multisystem Chronic airways infection Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency Intestinal dysfunction Abnormal sweat gland function Urogenital dysfunction NEUROFEEDBACK Specialty field within biofeedback Uses feedback electroencephalogram (EEG) Monitors ones mental state by registering current electrical patterns in the cortex Performs clinical training that enables the individual to modify those patterns, normalizing or optimizing brain activity KEY TERMS

  4. BACKGROUND CF profoundly impairs mental (along with the physical) health of the affected individual. BACKGROUND IN ORDER TO IMPROVE LIFE CHANCES OF CF PATIENTS IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO UNDERSTAND HOW SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL OUTCOMES CAN BE IMPROVED AND TO BETTER SUPPORT THEIR EMERGING CAPACITY FOR SELF-MANAGEMENT Neurofeedback was proved to be useful in the assessment and treatment in large number of cases but there is still lack of evidence which confirms the importance of neurofeedback in assessment and treatment of mental health in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis

  6. AIMS To distinguish eventual features that differ from the EEG in healthy individuals To investigate the EEG patterns ranging in the interval between 8 and 12 Hz that indicate state of relaxation / anxiety in CF patients To study the perspectives of neurofeedback training of CF individuals

THE STUDY TIME PERIOD: 1st of February – 30th April, 2007 PLACE: Department of Psychophysiology - Pediatric Clinic, Skopje, R.M DEFINITION: Prospective, Randomized and Controlled clinical study MATERIAL Table No. 2 – CONTROL GROUP Table No. 1 – EXPERIMENTAL GROUP METHODS DATA RECORDING: Software program BOSLAB DATA PROCESSING: Software program WINEEG STATISTICAL OPERATIONS: Statistica 5 (T test for small samples)

  9. RESULTS IAPF WinEeg Value After the Initial Session

RESULTS T-test for dependent samples - IAPF (WinEeg) for CF Patients Initial vs. Final Session Psychological assessment of CF Patients In adolescents with cystic fibrosis the evaluation revealed neurotic profile, while the score for depression was not so high in both, girls and boys (below cutoff for manifested depression).

  11. DISCUSSION Reasons explaining lower values of IAPF in CF patients • Potential hypoxia which can be by-product of the illness • Poor mental arousal (induced from the negative psycho-emotional impact of the disorder)

  12. CONCLUSIONS CF was proved to have negative psycho - emotional impact from the disorder Neurofeedback can be successfully used to support CF patient's capacity for self-management Further investigations should be conducted in order to confirm these results
