Test taking strategies. For the English section of the SAT. Scoring. Each section of the SAT is scored on a 200-800 point scale. The three scores are then added. A perfect score on the SAT would be a 2400.

  1. Test taking strategies For the English section of the SAT

  2. Scoring • Each section of the SAT is scored on a 200-800 point scale. • The three scores are then added. • A perfect score on the SAT would be a 2400. • Percentiles also will be on your score report. This shows how you compare to the other students who took the test.

  3. How many sections? • 9 sections to the test but only 8 count. • 1 section will be an experimental section but you will have no way of knowing which section.

  4. Sections of the test • Math – Regular and grid – in • Critical Reading – Sentence Completion, short reading, and long reading • Writing – Essay, multiple choice-Usage, sentence correction, and paragraph correction • Your essay will be scored differently on a 6 point scale.

  5. Test break down Critical Reading – 67 questions Writing – 49 questions and essay Math – 54 questions

  6. What to take with you • Admission ticket • Photo id • 3 pencils • Approved calculator • Watch with no alarm • snack

  7. Think positively • Picture yourself opening your envelope with your score and seeing a great score. You are prepared – Think about how much more work you put into preparing as compared to 95% of the people that took the test at the same time as you.

  10. Strategies for taking the SAT • Know how the test is organized and if the question should be hard or easy • Some sections will be arranged from easy to hard.

  11. Strategies for taking the SAT • Move around in your section • Do not spend time on the hard questions as you might if taking a test at school. Every problem is worth equal points.

  12. Strategies for taking the SAT • Be a good guesser. • If you can eliminate one of the options as wrong you just improved your odds. It’s a little like gambling.

  13. Strategies for taking the SAT • Be a good gridder. • Frequently check to see if you are answering the correct question as it corresponds to your answer sheet. • Strategy – Circle your answers in your test book and grid 5 at a time.

  14. Strategies for taking the SAT • Two minute warning • At this warning look for questions you can answer quickly. Don’t focus on just one question.

  15. Strategies for taking the SAT • Manage your stress • Don’t pay attention to others around you. Who cares if they finish early. It is foolish not to use all the time you are given and not to go back and check your answers.
