  2. Mission & Vision Engage in scholarly research in modeling and simulation (M&S), visualization, and analysis that yields significant contributions to the M&S body of knowledge, provides constructive solutions to critical challenges facing academic, government, and industry partners, and fosters the international advancement of the discipline of M&S. Promote economic development through collaboration with industry and through the continued maturation of research ideas and analysis to create tangible products and applications suitable for commercial development or public investment. Support M&S education and workforce development through classroom instruction and through active engagement of students in the research process. Vision: Old Dominion University, through VMASC, is a leader in modeling and simulation (M&S), analysis, and visualization, and is recognized for its multidisciplinary approach to M&S research, education, and application. 6. The heart of VMASC is a state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot building in the Modeling and Simulation Technology (MAST) Research Park on the Suffolk and Portsmouth border. VMASC is a Commonwealth asset - a high technology facility with world-class information technology, administrative, facility support that includes an 8,000 square foot experimentation lab as well as specialized labs for research in medical, transportation, game-based learning, virtual environments, GIS, and human factors fields. In addition, the primary facility contains over 10,000 square feet of meeting space and offices for VMASC researchers, small business incubation and support staff. VMASC is supported by researchers and affiliated faculty from all colleges of the university and is connected to the national lambda rail, enabling Internet connectivity of over 10 GB per second. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  7. VMASC has a core set of scientists, engineers, and researchers that are able to provide quality analysis in all areas of modeling and simulation including simulation interoperability, simulation support to live, virtual, and constructive simulation in support of exercises, training, facilitations, and experimentation. The VMASC team is uniquely suited to provide a wide breadth of modeling, simulation, analysis, and facilities to support business partners. The Center's expertise lies in both pure and applied research, highlighted by a unique multidisciplinary M&S approach in eight-core modeling and simulation applied research areas: Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  8. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories TRANSPORTATION LAB The Transportation laboratory includes eleven individual computer workstations, each with the capability of accessing a library of commercial transportation and analysis software products. Transportation simulations available include TransCad, the Cube® transportation suite (including Voyager, Avenue, Dynasim, and Analysis modules), Dynamics, Dynasmart, VISSUM, Synchro, CORSIM, and Paramics. All computers are accessible via remote connections and fully used by students and research staff. The entire laboratory is protected by an uninterruptable power supply. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  9. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories ADVANCED ANALYTICS & COMPLEX SYSTEMS LAB The Advanced Analytics Laboratory is designed to host analytic software for risk modeling and simulation, simulation-based optimization, public health and healthcare database application development and GIS tools for developing graphical and terrain databases.  The lab contains several workstations to support model development using tools like NorsysNetica, Oracle Crystal Ball, Arena, TreeAge, PowerSim, SAS and SAS Miner, Vensim, Simulink, FileMaker Pro Advanced and Server, Netica, Repast Simphony, NetLogo, Gambit, Maya, 3D Studio Max, and MultiGen, GIS data manipulation using tools like ArcInfo, and terrain database generation using tools like Terra Vista.  The AAL also contains a large table-sized digitizer and a wide-carriage color printer. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  10. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING LAB The Human Factors Engineering Laboratory is designed to host human-computer interface and human behavior modeling activities. The lab consists of two smaller isolated work areas that can provide a controlled quiet environment for testing human subjects, and a larger open laboratory area for other activities. The lab is instrumented to monitor and record the interface activities that occur between a human subject and a simulation exercise; this equipment also supports post-experiment playback and analysis of this interaction. The laboratory also is equipped with several other interactive display tools including 3D interactive displays and haptic devices. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  11. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories VIRTUAL SIMULATION LAB The Virtual Simulation Laboratory is designed to host simulators for conducting human-in-the-loop virtual simulation activities. The lab is configured for housing up to four simulators. Presently, it contains a single F/A-18 cockpit flight simulator. As more funding becomes available, additional simulators will be added. The virtual simulation lab is linked via the Internet to a driving simulator located on the main Old Dominion University campus. The laboratory facilitates investigations and experiments in which constructive, virtual, and live simulation components are integrated into a common simulation exercise. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  12. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories MEDICAL LAB The medical and health care modeling and simulation lab has identified four areas in which we have expertise, specifically, the use of M&S for the following: • Training
• Treatment
• Disease Modeling
• Management of Health Care Systems The lab consists of researchers from VMASC and ODU, area universities and health care systems. We have identified several unique diverse problems effecting medicine and health care, in which we innovatively implement modeling and simulation. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  13. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories M&S INTEROPERABILITY LAB The M&S Interoperability laboratory is currently investigating the impact of rising sea level on the region’s social, economical, and critical infrastructure components. The MSI lab’s Continuously Running Simulation Environment, Based on the Department of Homeland Security Infrastructure Taxonomy, loads any region’s map and mines the web for data to automatically initialize and calibrate the simulation and also supports different courses of action at operational and tactical levels. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
  14. VMASC On-Site M&S Laboratories VMASC DEMO LAB Our main demo lab is used to showcase VMASC’s latest M&S advances and to provide visitors with hands-on experiences of our projects. This venue affords participants the opportunity to ask in-depth questions and speak to researchers and scientists about their work. Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center
