Matt Gomez The 2N: Got a Little Captain in You?
Overview • Captain of the Round • Determine the 2AR • Strategist of the Negative • Dictate Positions (on and off) • Block Split • 2NR • Think on your feet… or butt since you’ll probably be sitting down • FLEXIBILITY AND VERSATILITY!
Before the Tournament • Majority of negative research • Intel Gathering • Wiki.debatecoaches.org • Case Neg • Frontlines • Extensions • New Strats • Create Strat Sheets • Speed Drills (you need them) • Rebuttal Redo's (need those more)
Before the Round (Aff Disclosed) • Judging Philosophy • Find out Aff • Decide Strat (consult your strat sheets – a good 2N has multiple options) • Organize the 1NC • Brief the 1N on the strat (also should be done pre-tournament, this should just be a refresher)
Before the Round (New Aff) • Tentative guidelines • Judge Philosophy • Review your generics – cp, da, k – decide the strongest • Impact file • (maybe new solvency mechanism but usually impacts stay the same) 4. Mentally prepare
Finding the Judge Philosophy • Tech savvy? • iDebate App • Judgephilosophies.wikispaces.com • Still stuck on paper? • Ask questions in a not annoying way • “Before we start, is it alright if I ask a few questions?” • Will be discussed more in Judge Adaptation Lecture
During the 1AC • Get the plan text handed to the 1N. • Listen and Read the 1AC cards (highlighted, underlined, and un-underlined, not just tags) • Cross-Hatch evidence you have questions on. • Lean over to 1N and give analytics for case. • Adapt Strat if you notice weaknesses or better options
Cross-Ex of the 1AC • Also will be covered in Cross-Ex lecture • This is perhaps the most important three minutes of the round • Will determine judge’s view of the aff • Reduce probability of advantages to ZERO • Highlight weaknesses – put affirmative on edge • Set up your arguments
Constructing a 1NC Strategy – basic layout • 1st Off – T • *2nd Off – K • *3rd Off – CP • *4th Off – DA *- stylistic preference • Case • Adv 1 • Adv 2 • Solvency • Why do we put case on bottom as the negative, and on top as the affirmative?
During the 1NC • Smart 2N’s will label all the flows for both yourself AND your partner. • If your 1N is lazy and doesn’t pre-flow case, do it for them (case is the only thing you should be flowing anyways.) • The rest of the time is yours to prepare specific link/case extensions to the aff.
During 1NC C/X • Main focus is still prepping the 2NC • Keep a loose ear in order to make sure • You get an idea of the arguments the 2AC will make • You can help out the 1N if they get stumped or need help
During 2AC • Flow EVERYTHING • Do not miss a single argument on any flow • This means you do NOT lean over to your partner and say “you take x,y,z flows, I’ll take 1,2,3 flows.” That will lose you debate rounds. • Clarify block split • Partially start answering 2A arguments on the flow you know you are going for
2AC Cross-Ex • Before the timer goes off, notify your 1N of questions you need answered and the 1N should get those out of the way in 20 – 30 seconds • Theory? • Perm Status? • All Perm Texts • As soon as you hear the answer the next 2 ½ minutes are rapid prep. • Goal is a little prep as possible taken for the 2NC – leaves you nearly all for 2NR.
2NC • Kicking Arguments– • Stylistically, I like to kick out of flows at the top. Cleans up the round immediately, gives you time to make sure you answer the offense, and doesn’t overspread the 1NR • However, some prefer bottom of 2NC, or even 1NR because it keeps aff guessing • Your call • Go for the strongest/best known to you position • Give yourself options • Can Effectively end the debate
2NC Cont.. • Different 2NC approaches • Case, CP, DA • CP, DA • DA, Case • K • K, Case (favorite) • 8 minutes of Case (Andres Special)
What a good 2NC should have • DA/CP/K lectures will be more in depth on what exactly to do in this speech however…. • Guidelines • Answer ALL 2AC offense • Generate at least 2 new offensive arguments – per flow. (Impact Modules, Theory, Turns Case, etc) • Good Impact Story and Link Analysis • Too many cards = bad 2NC. Not enough cards = not enough offense. Find a happy medium.
2NC C/X • I know you just got done with the most epic 8 minutes of your life, but calm down for c/x – no judge likes ajerk. • 3 C’s • Calm • Cool • Collected • This is extra speech time for you. Sneakily insert arguments you didn’t get too • Give yourself extra analysis • More importantly when they cut you off, let them. Makes them look bad, not you.
1NR • First things first, if the 1N DARES to take your precious prep time, kindly throw the biggest expando in your tub at him/her. Maybe even the whole tub. • Flow – You’re probably excited about your previous speech, but the 1AR could blow you out of the water and without a good 1NR flow, you’ll look really bad as you re-read your partners flow in the 2NR. • Most Importantly, mentally prepare yourself to be able to go for anything read in the 2NC or 1NR
1AR • Flow… duh • Have 1N mark off how much time they spend on each flow • ADVANCED: get to the point that you can flow answers to the arg rather than the arg itself • Decision time is almost here.
2NR Prep • With any luck, you’ve given yourself plenty of time – you’ll need it: • Talk with the 1N again – ultimately you get the call and your partner probably won’t say anything but “IDC, you decide” (bad 1N!), but its nice to get a second opinion. • Within 20 seconds your mind should be made up • Have 1N retrieve ALL evidence (tricksy, have them retrieve ev for a flow you aren’t going for) • Prep an outline – you should already have analysis in your head • At least 30 Seconds on the overview • Get up to the podium in the last 5 seconds – strong start.
2NR • First is the Round Overview (If you have time) • 15 – 20 seconds. • Confusing Word Alert: Multi-level comparative statement • Tie together your strat: “If I win X, and X is the most important thing to your ballot, then even if they win Y & Z, that’s irrelevant.” • Weigh Offensive Claims: “They have Y, but we are way ahead on X which outweighs because…” • Next, Kick out – close all the doors • Next, offense – have to be making comparative statements • Next, answer terminal defense – you functionally need none unless you can’t turn their offense • Finally, end with a strong ballot framing statement
2AR • Flow – see what you did wrong – rebuttal redo • Watch Judge • DON’T: • Clean • Talk to Partner • Smirk
After Round • The Same as all the other speeches
After Tournament • Update Strats • Cut Answers to new args • Rinse and Repeat… It’s the life of the 2N.
