  1. BEEF CATTLE RECORDS AND RECORD SYSTEMS By David R. Hawkins Michigan State University

  2. BEEF COW HERDS • Small herd size • Part time or supplemental enterprise • Periodic versus daily observations • Business activity generates income in excess of costs • Consumption activity requires continued investment to be maintained

  3. Cow-Calf Health and Productivity Audit • 27.6% of beef cow-calf operations have no records at all • 65.2% keep records by hand (Based on surveys of 3,300 producers in 48 states) • Hopefully this will change in the future.

  4. Evolution of Beef Records • Barn Door • Checkbook • Pocket Calendar • Desk Folders • Computer Systems

  5. Types of Records • Inventory • Ancestral • Performance • Health • Financial

  6. IDENTIFICATION • Must be unique to each animal in the herd • Should be the same ID for ear tag, tattoo & registration certificate • Tattoo is permanent, but hard to read without catching the animal. • Ear tag is most common. Small metal tags are hard to read. Large plastic tags are often used. They should be “chute side” for easy reading.

  7. IDENTIFICATION • Brands can cause hide damage. Hot brands cause more damage than freeze brands. • Microchip technology may be used in the future. • Europe and Canada have adopted required animal identification. Look for the U.S. to have a system in place in the next few years.

  8. Ear Tag Example • Unique Individual ID • Year or Letter • Sire • Dam • Donor & Recipient • Birth Date • Color Code

  15. Total Quality Management • You can not manage what you can not measure. • Decide what is important. • How will the data be used? • If it is not going to be used, why record it?

  16. Computer Programs • Computers do not save recording time. • Computers do save time in record storage, retrieval and analysis.

  17. Computer Programs • Inventory, Performance, Health • Commercial Companies (Red Wing) • CHAPS (North Dakota State) • Breed Association • American Angus Association • AIMS • Financial • SPA and IRM
