  4. Tutors • Your first point of contact for any concerns/questions about the progress or welfare of your son/daughter • Phone or e mail them using their staff code, for example, ak@eatonbank.cheshire.sch.uk • Ask your son/daughter for the initials of their tutor!

  7. The Curriculum • A level/BTEC • Core time • PHSE • Curriculum Enrichment • House and 6th form assemblies More details later…

  8. A levels = AS + A2 Year 12 4 subjects = AS levels Year 13 3 subjects = A2 levels At the end of year 13, most students will have 3 full A levels plus one AS qualification.

  9. Year 12 matters! • Half the A-level marks come from AS exams in year 12 • Some subjects have AS exams in January , just 3½ months away! • All subjects have exams in May/June • AS grades given on university applications • Evidence for teachers’ estimated grades for university references

  10. The grades A level : A*-E = pass F and G do not exist U = fail D and E grades are pass grades at A level (You may not think of D and E grades as passes at GCSE, this is an important difference.)

  11. How well will I do? • Your GCSE grades do NOT guarantee how well you do at A-level! • How hard you work + how much independent studying you do has a major impact!

  12. Learning in the Sixth Form • You can not learn everything you need if you only • do the work “set” by the teacher • “memorise” the revision book” • 4- 5 hours per subject per average week • 4 subjects →16-20 hours/week • For example: • 3 hours per day Monday- Thursday (=12 hours) • Plus 4-8 hours at the weekend

  13. What else should I be doing in addition to my homework? • Doing “more than is asked or set” is required in order to achieve an A2L grade of 1. • Every subject has given and discussed a sheet detailing what extra students should be doing. • Copied in planner/exercise book plus a copy in their user space.) “I’ve finished! I’ve got nothing to do!” = Not possible! Don’t believe them!

  14. Part- time jobs? • May develop some skills and increase self confidence  • but more than about an 8 hour part-time job will stop you getting the grades you are capable of! • Avoid late evening shifts in the week

  15. A-level results up again! • 99% pass rate A*-E • Almost half gaining very top grades A*,A, B • Each grade is worth a certain number of points; the higher the grade, the more points. • Average Points Scores: significant rise over 3 years 2011 : 752↑ 2010: 705 ↑ 2009: 646

  16. Leaver destinations… • 73 students wanted to go to university • 71 have secured places, 66 into their first or second choice universities • One student to Cambridge University (history) • One student into the Army (Officer Training) • 2 to the prestigious “Northern School of Contemporary Dance” in Leeds
