LEGAL FRAMEWORK Law on Nature Protection (Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia No. 67/2004) - harmonized with EU Directives - ratified conventions • Country Study for Biodiversity of the Republic of Macedonia – first national report (prepared in 2003) • Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of the Republic of Macedonia (adopted 2004)

  3. INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK • Biodiversity conservation and management fall under competence and interest of two Ministries, in addition to the Macedonian Parliament, National Committee for Biodiversity, scientific institutions, other public institutions and NGOs. The basic capacities for biodiversity management have been established. • There is no integrative biodiversity monitoring system and national monitoring programme

  4. Development of National Biodiversity Indicators Agency of Environment NRC - Nature Protection and Biodiversity First annual report on development of national biodiversity indicators prepared in 2004

  5. Indicator: Species diversity - Number of endemic species within various taxonomic groups of higher plants in Macedonia - Number of endemic and threatened vertebrate species in Macedonia

  6. Indicator: Designated areas - Number of national designated areas over time - Cumulated area of sites protected under international and European conventions and instruments over time - Cumulated area of national designated areas over time - Proportion of different categories of nationaly protected areas

  7. Indicator: Agro-biodiversity - Agricultural production - Indigenous breeds and species

  8. CDDA • Completed in 2003 for the first time: - designations (national categorization) - sites • Law on Nature Protection - New categorization according to IUCN - Strict Natural Reserve - National Park - Monument of Nature - Nature Park - Protected Landscape - Multipurpose Area

  9. Proposals for Future steps • Identification of existing sectoral indicators • Development of National core set of biodiversity indicators • Preparation of National monitoring programme • Harmonization of the approaches to indicators and monitoring programmes development with other countries in Europe (capacity building, exchange of information, best practices, etc) • Recategorization and revalorization of existing protected areas • Development of National Emerald Network
