Definitions Research: A systematic investigation that is designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Human Subject: A living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains: • data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or • identifiable private information.
How can human subjects research be conducted ethically? Examples for guidance come from: • Medical research • Research involving children • Research involving minority groups • Deception studies
Fundamental Principles: • Respect for Persons • Beneficence • Justice
Types of Review As determined by NAU IRB office staff upon review of your IRB protocol: • Not research • Exempt • Expedited • Full Board • Continuing • Amendments to research
