  2. Asthma • A lung disease • A “chronic” disease that wont go away • Causes breathing problems • Successive coughing • Shortness of breath • Wheezing

  3. Emphysema • A condition where a part of the lungs called alveoli are over-inflated. • Breakdowns wall of the alveoli. • Decreases the way lungs work and causes breathlessness • A rapidly growing problem

  4. Cases of Asthma in Hawaii • This is graph shows the amount of people who have asthma in Hawaii • It was out of 1000 people and it seems Hawaiians are affected most frequently.s

  5. Native Hawaiians Affected The affect of asthma from smoking (as shown in the graph), is easily affecting all ages of Native Hawaiians. Native Hawaiians before were so healthy some things still affect us more than other ethnicities.

  6. Relation to Ke Ala Pono The lung diseases that are caused by smoking, directly and second hand, are related to both Malama and Ho’ihi. Malama because it shows that you don’t care enough about yourself and others around you to not smoke. Ho’ihi because it shows that you are not respectful to yourself your body and other people.

  7. Conclusions • Obviously, smoking has affected many people especially Hawaiians greatly. The asthma and emphysema numbers on Hawaiian are inflated way more than other ethnicities. • Also that smoking has a great effect on people that are just exposed to smoking and not just the smokers.
