  1. Kindergarten Newsletter Mrs. Leland’s Class For the week of August 27-31, 2012 This week we will work on our first set of letters. They are called “lip poppers” because when you make their sounds your lips pop open. These letters are Pp and Bb. For this first time, the children will be completing what is called a “Letter Paper” during work stations. When the paper comes home, please take the time to go over it with your child. Your child will also read a new book, Cat and Dog Play Together. Please add this to their book box and continue reading it along with their other books for extra practice. Our shared reading book this week is called, The Little School Bus. We will talk about the different characters in the story. We will also learn more about words that rhyme. (Words rhyme if they have the same middle and ending sounds.) Give your child two words such as ‘big’ and ‘pig’ and ask if they rhyme. Use the back of this newsletter for more ways to practice rhyming. We will also discuss the sequence of the story. Our new “popcorn words” this week are little, the, and can. Have your child use them in a sentence. We will continue to review our previous words. Keep practicing at home by having your child find the words in books, magazines, and newspapers. I am so proud of each child and their reading!  Language Arts Focus: New “Popcorn Words” the little can This week we will be learning about and creating graphs as a way to explain data. Your child should be familiar with the terms most and fewer as we learn about this concept. During stations they will be graphing something sweet.  In the classroom, they will graph their favorite character from The Little School Bus. The children will also work on sorting objects by either their size, color, or type of shape. We will continue to work on the names of shapes. This week the children will also practice using positional words and phrases such as over, under, on top of, behind, in back of, in front of, and beside. Sometimes math paper are sent home not completed. This is just a way for extra practice. Please take time to go over these concepts with your child. Thanks!
