  2. How is the survey used? • ACGME reports results to each Program and Institution • ACGME site visitors take survey results very seriously and program accreditations are in jeopardy if results are alarming • All program improvement efforts are based on survey results

  3. Who needs to take the survey? • All residents and fellows listed in the ACGME Accreditation Data System (ADS) • PD’s should confirm their resident/fellow listings in the ADS

  4. When & how is the survey to be completed? • Each program is assigned a timeframe for their survey to be completed • PDs need to view their schedule through the ADS • Residents need to login to the resident survey site on the ACGME website and enter: • Username: 10 digit program # • Password: DOB, plus last two letters of last name

  5. Some Words of Advice • Review the most commonly misinterpreted questions with residents • Define words that may have multiple interpretations • Ensure 100% survey completion

  6. Misunderstood Questions • Has your ability to learn been compromised by the presence of trainees who are not part of your program, such as residents from other specialties, subspecialty fellows, PhD students or nurse practitioners? • How often do your rotations and other major assignments provide an appropriate balance between clinical education and other demands, such as service obligations? • Duty hours must be limited to 80 hours per week, averaged over a 4 week period. (This means that the average should be working hours within rotations, and not across rotations.)

  7. Questions (cont’d) • Residents/fellows must be provided with 1 day in 7 free from all educational and clinical responsibilities. (This does not mean that residents must have 1 day off per week.) • At-home call must not be so frequent as to preclude adequate time for rest. (Adequate rest is generally defined as 10 hours, though less time is allowed when appropriately educationally justified.)

  8. Definitions • Call from home vs. in-house call (For call taken from home, any time spent in the hospital after being called in is counted towards duty hours. Call from home that does not result in travel to the hospital or clinical site is not to be included in duty hours.)
