  1. Modern China Shanghai

  2. Communist Government • Based on an ideology that wants to provide for needs and ensure peace. • Has been seen as cruel at times to its people. • A system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party

  3. The Cultural Revolution • A political program by Mao that was designed to create a culture based on Communist ideas. • Art, books, temples, and anything seen as anti-Communist was destroyed. • Anyone who disagreed with Mao was arrested, tortured, or even killed.

  4. China Modernizes New leader, Deng, reforms China by opening it to the rest of the world, these reforms moved away from Mao’s ideas. Privatized land which helped to raise the income of farmers.

  5. Foreign investors also opened factories, hotels, and other business. • Small, private businesses began to open SEZ: Special Economic Zones allowed foreign investors to run factories with little Chinese government interruption.

  6. Tiananmen Square Massacre • In Beijing, 1989, crowds gathered to see a new Freedom Statue. When officials ordered the crowd to leave, they refused. • Pro-Democracy supporters were arrested and others were killed. • This was seen internationally. • Since then, many Chinese human rights activists have been given prison sentences.

  7. Economic Superpower • Member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). • As a member it receives the same low tariffs (or taxes) on goods or services that other member countries receive. • Other members(139): US, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Egypt, United Kingdom

  8. Hong Kong and Taiwan • Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region. Taiwan • Refuge for Chiang Kai-shek once Communism took over China. • Tensions with Beijing.

  9. 2008 Olympics • Summer Olympics in Beijing. • Wants the world to forget about past problems like the Tiananmen Square Protests. • China wins 100 medals: 51 Gold, 21 Silver, and 28 Bronze.

  10. The Three Gorges Dam • Has been called the largest project in China since the Great Wall.

  11. Some see it has a good source of hydroelectricity for the growing nation. They think it will help with the flooding of the Yangzi River where it is built. • There are also environmental concerns like pollution that will stay in the river instead of go to the sea. • They also worry about the surrounding areas if something were to happen to the dam.

  12. Education in China • Children attend school at the age of 6, but many primary schools are crowded with up to 50 students in a class. • Most students seem motivated to learn. • They attend school Monday-Friday and Saturday morning. • They learn reading, arithmetic, science, as well as politeness, discipline, and respect.
