  3. Rosie the Riveter • Symbol of the campaign to hire women • Inspired by the song “Rosie the Riveter” by the Vagabonds

  5. Women Sending Us Into the Sky • Between 1940 and 1945 women in the workforce rose from 27% to 37% • Aviation saw the greatest increase • 310,000 women were in the aviation industry in 1943 • 65% of the industry’s total workforce

  6. All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) • Baseball was America’s pastime, but the war would not stop young players from being drafted • An all-female league was developed to continue the season

  7. Sending African Americans to Work • Still didn’t want to hire African Americans • A. Philip Randolph threatens to march on Washington if things don’t change

  8. Executive Order 8802 • “there shall be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government because of race, creed, color or national origin.” • The Fair Employment Practices Commission is established to enforce Exec. Order 8802

  9. The Detroit Race Riot • Black and white teenage girls start fighting • Things escalate and everyone starts fighting across the city • 25 blacks and 9 whites are killed

  10. Where are the Workers? • Whites are at war • Blacks are in the factories • The Japanese are in camps • Who else is there?

  11. The Bracero Program • US works with Mexican government to send workers • Become farmers in the Southwest • Also build and maintain railroads • Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans cross the border to find work

  12. Legalized Slavery • Signed contracts in English • Low wages • Unsafe conditions • Taken advantage of • Lived in tiny tents and trailers

  13. The Victory Suit • No vest • No cuffs • Short jacket • Narrow lapels

  14. The Zoot Suit • Baggy, pleated pants • Knee-length jacket with wide lapels • Wide-brimmed hat • Long hair

  15. The Zoot Suit Riots • Los Angeles • Rumor: Zoot suiters had attacked sailors • 2,500 soldiers and sailors storm into Mexican American communities and attacked zoot suited teenagers

  16. Germans and Italians • Given curfews • Subject to police searches • Fishing boats were taken • Forced to move • Some were interned

  17. Japanese Americans • Mobs attack their businesses • Bankers won’t cash their checks • Grocers won’t sell them food • Newspapers talk of Japanese spies • The public demands they be removed from the West Coast

  18. Executive Order 9066 • Any part of the US can be declared a military zone and the War Department could remove anyone they wanted from that area • The whole West Coast is declared a military zone

  19. Korematsu v. United States • Fred Korematsu argued interment wasn’t violated his rights • Went to the Supreme Court • Ruled interment constitutional • Military necessity

  20. Japanese Internment • Only a few days to sell everything • Put on trains and sent to camps in remote areas • Cramped living spaces • Poorly equipped housing
