  1. To be high tech or not to be high tech By Shelby Pogany

  2. What we are talking about. • In school districts now and days students are trying to persuade teachers and the school board to start using Laptops and iPads in classrooms and allowing students to go home so they can be able to access school sites and also other internet services they are unable to gain access to before.

  3. Why we are talking about it. • Students should be able to have some sort of technology that everybody has access to so that school can be much more organized and easier to keep along with all the students. • Students are actually proven to excel in school due to the excessive use of technology. • Technology's Influence on Student-Centered Learning Environments  Chip Flemmer Boise State University

  4. How could we do this. • Schools should be able to work up a type of budget to purchase things such as laptops and iPads. • It is understandable that some schools have more funding then other due to certain circumstances • I will give you three different types of budgets and products that could work with most schools.

  5. iPad budget. • iPads prices are starting at $499.00 • We would also need to include a few programs to get us along (depending on grade group example shows high school): • Science, biology based applications • English, grammar based applications • Algebraic, mathematical based applications • Historical, governmental based applications

  6. Applications extension. • The Elements: A Visual Exploration-$13.99 • Dictionary & Thesaurus – Free • Algebra(level varies)-$0.99 • World History Study Guide-$4.99 • Microsoft PowerPoint2010-$1.99 • Microsoft Word 2010-$1.99 • And any other applications that may be useful towards the students education

  7. More budget details… • Also another thing that you must need when purchasing an expensive piece of technology is a warranty and other essentials such as… • Apple iPad case-$39.00 • Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter-$29.00 • iPad - AppleCare Protection Plan - Auto-Enroll -$99.00

  8. Totaled up$$$ • Lets say that in our school we have 1,200 students • This plan states that each iPad including apps and accessories will cost $731.35 per student • So in a school of 1,200 students the total cost of purchasing all these iPads would be $877,620 including tax, not shipping and handling note: other applications that may be needed during time in school can be purchased by parental guardians (ex. For art classes, music classes etc.)

  9. Laptop budget • Macbook pro(13”) starting price are $1,199.00 • We would also need to include a few programs to get us along (depending on grade group example shows high school): • Science, biology based applications • English, grammar based applications • Algebraic, mathematical based applications • Historical, governmental based applications

  10. Applications extension. • You only need to buy • iWork (preinstalled version[$49.00]) • Applecare protection plan ($249.00) • Dock connector ($29.00) • VGA adapter ($29.00) • Microsoft office Mac2011-Home and student edition ($119.95) • only need to purchase one to put on all computers

  11. Totaled up$$$ • Lets say that in our school we have 1,200 students • This plan states that each Macbook including apps and accessories will cost $1,529 per student (not including Microsoft office application since it only needs to be purchased once • So in a school of 1,200 students the total cost of purchasing all these Macbooks would be $1,944,888 including tax, not shipping and handling and not including Microsoft office. • note: other applications that may be needed during time in school can be purchased by parental guardians (ex. For art classes, music classes etc.)

  12. What would be the plan? • Students (whether you choose the laptop budget plan or the ipad budget plan) would all be able to get a laptop/ipad the starting of their freshman year • It will be their responsibility after that • They would be able to bring it home (weekend too) • At the end of every school year they must return their laptop/ipad and then the following year the exact same laptop/ipad will be returned to the same student.

  13. Plan cont. • Applications the students would like to have that are not previously purchased by the school must be purchased by the student. • Any damages made are the students responsibility to get fixed (laptops/ipads would be used weekly) • At the end of the students for years they have the choice of donating or purchasing their ipad/laptop for a bargain price

  14. Goals • Goals would be that students would be on task and at the same pace as everybody else • Students would be able to have access to the same programs; nobody would have special treatment • Also higher constant grade point average for overall student body.
