  1. Foods Worldwide Erin & Annie (KU) Sebastian & Christian (UNACHI)

  2. Description of Project Our topic for the social awareness activity was foods worldwide. Each member found websites discussing popular foods in their country. Once students from both countries posted their websites, we created a PowerPoint presentation about foods in Kansas and Panama.

  3. Description of Collaboration We collaborated with two students from UNACHI in Panama. We used emails and the Wiki site to communicate. Each group member found websites representing popular foods from his or her country. Each member of the group had a different schedule, making communication not always clear. In the future, it may work better to set specific times during class when all members of the group will email at the same time or Skype.

  4. Quick Facts • The very first Pizza Hut opened up in Wichita in 1958 at Wichita State University • Kansas is well known for its barbecue • America's primary producers of beef and wheat • first big food service chain, Harvey House

  5. Kansas Wheat • There is a lot more work than realized to have a great wheat harvest! • Most of the wheat grown in Kansas is winter wheat.

  6. Kansas Wheat • Everything has to be just right in order to cut the wheat. • Both the wheat kernels and stalks must be dry. If the kernels aren't dry, they will spoil in the bin. • If the stalks aren't dry, they won't cut easily and will get stuck together in the combine.

  7. Kansas Barbecue • Kansas City is known for its barbecue. • Kansas combined the styles of traditional Carolina bbq sauce and traditional Texas bbq sauce to create the best of both worlds. • Dry rub-spiced • slow roasted hour after hour over a pit of hickory

  8. Food in Panama • The central ingredients of every meal are coconut rice and beans. • The rice is cooked with the beans and other spices. • Fried green plantains, or patacones, are also included. • The meat dish changes each meal.

  9. Favorite Foods in Panama • Pollo (chicken) • Ceviche ("raw fish in lemon juice and cilantro") • Yams • Corvina ("a white fish from the Pacific") • Camarones (shrimp)

  10. Issues Related to Topic • Over eating and obesity have become a huge problem in the United States, especially in children. • How do cultural foods impact the obesity rate?
