  4. Balko “What You Eat Is Your Business” • Balko’s areas of concern- Public Policy, or the governments regulation of our diet: • Banning vending machines in school. Is it ok for the government to control what we eat?

  5. Balko and Zinczenko In small groups discuss: • What is Balko’s argument? Who does he believe is responsible for people’s health? Find 2 quotes that explain his opinion. • Find two more quotes that you find important. Explain why they are important. • How does Balko compare to Zinczenko? • What is your opinion?

Argumentative Writing • What it is: • A form of persuasive writing that involves having an opinion and using examples, facts, and statistics to convince your audience. • When we use it: ALL THE TIME! • Business emails (raises, cover letters, sales) • Friends and family (understanding one another: kids, sports, finances, weekend plans, dinner options) • College (grants, scholarships, admissions, all classes)

  8. Argumentative Writing • If we already use argumentative techniques everyday, why do we need to learn this in college? • Effectiveness = outcomes • Better argument = results • Allows you to understand other’s methods

  10. Short Essay #1 Bring draft to class next Sunday, February 26. We will work on the essay for most of class, so it is important to have your ideas ready to discuss. Assignment: We’ve looked at two different opinions on health care: personal responsibility and public/government responsibility. In a 700-1100 word essay, form an opinion about who is responsible for our health. Use at least one essay (Balko or Zinc.) to support your ideas or to use to refute. Be sure to use important quotes from the reading.
