Religious Orders • Response to changing social conditions • Individuals feel called to address a problem • Dominic (Dominicans) - Teaching • Francis (Franciscans) - Simplicity and spirituality • Ignatius of Loyola (Jesuits) – Reform • Gathered in community, the desire of heart and God given skills and talents meet the needs of the world. • Can include both consecrated lay members (brother, sister, nun, monk) AND consecrated ordained members (Brother or monk who is also ordained a priest)

Saints: Models and Intercessors • All members of Christ Body in heaven are saints • Church holds us specific examples of inspiration to help us grow in holiness: Canonized Saints. • Saints are • examples of the face of Christ in the world • models of holiness, and encourage us to be holy • heavenly intercessors, praying for us on earth • Liturgical Year – Honors saints on specific days • Universal celebration of hope in Christ

Signs of the Times • Looking at particular circumstances of life and interpreting them in light of Apostolic Tradition (Scripture & Tradition). • Staying true to the Gospel and applying its message to issues of each generation • Answer questions in a way people understand. • Examples: • International conflicts, health care reform, economic justice, technology.

Engaging Culture • Dialog with culture to speak to the needs of people. • Transform culture to conform with the Gospel message. • Culture of life vs. culture of death. • Right & responsibility to bring Christian values to social, political, and economic issues. • Fundamental value is the dignity of every human life.
