  1. Online Shopping in India India has an internet user base of about 354 million as of June 2015, third largest in the world. Google and Forrester Consulting, in their survey report said that the Indian online shopping figures will touch $15 billion by 2016, with over 50 million new buyers emerging from tier 1 and tier 2 cities. The report went on to state that the total number of online shoppers in India will nearly triple to 100 million by 2016. These staggering figures find an echo in Nitin Bawankule’s opinion who said that “The consumer confidence to shop online has grown significantly in the last year and a half”. Bawankule is the industry director for e-commerce, local and classifieds at Google India. About 70% of India's e-commerce market is travel related. Electronics and Apparel are the biggest categories in terms of sales. In the online shopping category, women buyers had their bagsful of apparel, beauty and skincare, home furnishing, baby products and jewellery. Mobile phones are another flag-marked entry on the map of online shopping. ”The smartphone and tablet shoppers will be strong growth drivers. Mobile phones already account for 11 percent of ecommerce sales, and their share will jump to 25 percent by 2017,” Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said. New sector in e-commerce is online medicine. Companies like Reckwing-India, Buyonkart and Healthkart sell complementary and alternative medicine where as NetMed sells prescription medicine online. As per “Indian Hospital Services Market Outlook” by RNCOS, the online healthcare sector is poised for growth by $280 million in the next 5 years with the major drivers being saving of time, convenience of online, personalized attention and technological advancement. Healthcare has emerged as one of the most progressive and the largest service sectors in India, with a GDP spend of 8% in 2012, up from 5.5% in 2009 and is slated to grow even further in times to come. The healthcare industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17 per cent during 2011-2020. So what caused this spurt in online shopping? The answer lies primarily in variety and convenience. The PwC India report ‘Total Retail 2015: Retailers and the Age of Disruption’ reveals the top three answers as “lower price”, “24x7 shopping” and “lack of travel”.
