What is a Search Engine? • Software that indexes and catalogs the Internet into a database • Computer generated databases • Databases created by people • Lists provide short descriptions
Two Ways to Conduct a Search • Directory searching • Uses links to follow a subject stream. • Example: Education->Teaching->Curriculum • Keyword searching • Use words or phrases to identify what your looking for. • Use “key functions” to clarify search. • Example: lessons or units

When to use a Subject Directory • Searches based upon rough, vague, uninformed ideas • Locating a wide range of information on a specific topic

Boolean Operators • Use “and” to find sites that contain all words entered into query • Example: lessons and units • Use “or” to find sites that contain at least one of the listed words. • Example: lessons or units • Use “not” to exclude a word or phrase from the sites your query pulls up. • Example: Cleveland not Indians • Most major engines *except* Google, Infoseek, and Yahoo support

Key Functions • Including (+) and Excluding (-) • + before a word, indicates that you want the word included in search results. • Example: +lesson plans • - before a word, indicates that you do not want the word included in search results. • Example: Cleveland –Indians • Most search engines allow you to precede a word with + to include or - to exclude

Keyword Functions • Anchor: Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the text of a hyperlink. • Domain: Finds pages within the specified domain • Host: Finds pages with specified host name • Image: Finds pages with images having the specified file name • Like: Finds pages similar to or related to the specified URL • Text: Finds all pages containing the specified word or phrase • Title: Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title • URL: Finds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL
