  6. Voice • Definition: Voice is the character or personality of an individual How would you describe Tiresias’ voice?

  7. Tone • Definition: Tone refers to the overall effect of a passage of literature. This generally occurs through the use of diction (word choice). • What’s the tone? • As Trudy walked her dog, Fluffy, she slipped and fell face-down in a pile of mud. As Trudy stumbled out of the puddle, Fluffy noticed a rabbit and darted after the furry creature. While Fluffy dragged her owner with the leash, Trudy wondered if she’d survive the morning. Fluffy

  8. Internal Conflict • Definition: a struggle which occurs within a character’s mind • Examples: • Should Tiresias tell the truth and admit that he knows that Oedipus is the murderer? • Should Jocasta admit that she and Laius left their son to die in the wilderness? Jocasta, World’s Best Mother

  9. External Conflict • Definition: a struggle that occurs between a character and an outside force • Example: • Oedipus and Creon argue about whether Creon is trying to usurp the throne from Oedipus. Oedipus and Creon arguing

  10. Characterization • Definition: the portrayal or motivation of a particular character • Example: • What is the characterization of Oedipus? Oedipus with Jocasta

  11. Monologue • Definition: an extended, uninterrupted speech in which the individual addresses another individual • Example: Early in the play, the Priest gives an extended speech, or monologue. In the beginning of the play, what’s the purpose of the Priest’s monologue?

  12. Dialogue • Definition: a conversation between two or more characters • Example: Oedipus: “Everything you say is the same – riddles, obscurities. Tiresias: Aren’t you the best man alive at guessing riddles” (26)? www.post-gazette.com Oedipus arguing with Tiresias
