Weekly Contact Hour Model (before 2011) • Standard load: 15 hrs • The load may be reduced by other activities (allowance) • Allowance for Res/Adm and Other activities - PhD/Res MSc supervision : 1.5 hour - National Research Grant: up to 2 hrs per grant - Research Publication: up to 2 hrs per IntJouranl paper - Management of large unit: 0.5-1.5 hour • UG Course coordinator: 4 hours • PG Course coordinator: 2 hours and etc …

Annual Workload Model (from 2011) Standard annual full time workload: 1725 hrs Workload allocation • Block hours: 350 hours for every full time staff; • Teaching: 1hr lecture = 3 hrs; 1hr Tut=1.5 hr, …; • Research: 0%, 20% (345hrs), 30%, 40%, …; • PhD/Res MSc: 90 hrs per year; • Administration: 10% for PG coordinator & 20% for UG ; • etc …

Government Support to Univ Research (2011) Total: $1.51 billion (1510 million) for Res & Res Training • Shared by 41 Institutes: 0.4m to 181m; • Curtin: 34 million; • Uni of Wollongong: 28m; • Uni of Tech Sydney: 22m; • Uni of South Aust: 28m; • Qld Uni of Tech 37m. Factors: Res Student total load, Res Student total completion, Research publication, Research incomes

Research Performance Measure (RPI) Aim • Collect research data: publications details – Script database • Measure staff research performance by RPI • Award Res Excellence using RBG from Gov RPI Points: • 150 points per $10k ARC Discovery Proj grant; • 100-150 points for refereed journal papers; 50 for refereed conf paper • 400 points for per PhD student completion;

ERA & Aust University Res Rankings Ranking Parameters • Mainly based on Research Publications; • Also consider other factors: grants, etc… Ranking Classification • 3-5: at and above world (international) standard; • 1-2: below world (international) standard; Curtin’s ranking • 20 discipline areas : at and above world (international) standard; • Applied maths is at world standard • Numerical & computational maths is one of the 5 univ at/above world standard
