  1. Welcome Back! Universal Design for Learning Office of Secondary Mathematics August 22, 2012

  2. Participants will: • Identify the principles of Universal Design for Learning. • Share ideas on how learning experiences in any lesson could be modified to incorporate principles of Universal Design for Learning. • Examine MSDE lesson seeds and discuss how principles of UDL will be used in developing lesson plans.

  3. You are preparing a formal dinner for a large gathering of friends and family and you decide to serve pork tenderloin to everyone. Once your guests arrive, you remember that you invited several small children who might not eat pork, an uncle who keeps kosher and several vegetarians. You want to please everyone, so you hurriedly prepare some macaroni and cheese for the children, a salad for the vegetarians and something kosher for your uncle.

  4. Now imagine the same scenario, only this time you have taken into account the differences among your guests’ eating habits ahead of time. When they arrive, they all find something that they can eat at your table.

  5. Retrofitting • Retrofitting refers to the addition of new technology or features to older systems. • Drawbacks of Retrofitting: • Each retrofit solves only one local problem • Retrofitting can be costly

  6. Universal Designs Velcro Tactile Pavement Electric Toothbrush Audio Book Low –floor Bus

  7. One size does NOT fit all – alternatives for everyone. • Designed from the Beginning—Not added on later. • Access for everyone, not just some..

  8. Link between Architecture and Learning? • “Consider the needs of the broadest possible range of users from the beginning” • -- Architect, Ron Mace

  10. Principles of UDL Principles of UDL http://www.cast.org/udl/index.html

  11. UDL and the Learning Brain • Recognition: the “what” of learning • Multiple means of representation • Strategic: the “how” of learning • Multiple means of action and expression • Affective: the “why” of learning • Multiple means of engagement

  12. Principle I: Multiple Means of Representation • Recognition: the “what” of learning • Multiple means of representation Access to content. Provide information in a variety of formats. Adjust the content based on the needs of the students. Access to learning for students with a variety of backgrounds.

  13. Principle II: Multiple Means of Action and Expression • Strategic: the “how” of learning • Multiple means of action and expression Reduce barriers in learning. Provide options for students to show what they know. Provide flexibility in ways information is presented. Provide flexibility in how students are engaged.

  14. Principle III: Multiple Means of Engagement • Affective: the “why” of learning • Multiple means of engagement Access to content via student engagement Explore how student affect can inform teaching practice Encourage learners to regulate and take control

  16. “If you assign a project and get back 30 of the same thing, you didn't assign a project; you assigned a recipe.”- Steve Keinath

  17. Why UDL? Why Now? Common Core UDL

  18. Common Core • The standards provide a clear and rigorous set of learning targets aimed toward what students must learn. • The CC standards are designed to help students to develop deep understanding of topics with connections to authentic, real world scenarios. • The standards aim to engage students in building knowledge and skills needed for success in college and careers.

  19. UDL is a research-based framework addressing learner diversity. • UDL principles address how we teach, how students engage in learning, and how we measure what students learn. • UDL allows for flexibility in all aspects of instruction.

  20. The Common Core and Universal Design for Learning work together! In teaching the Common Core Standards, educators should provide multiple ways to access resources and content so learners are given the opportunity to take charge of their own learning. Common Core UDL

  21. Activity I • Lesson Analysis Lesson Seed Review Pythagorean Theorem Read the selected lesson thoroughly. Analyze the lesson through the lens of your assigned principle of UDL. Use the UDL Educator Checklist as a tool to evaluate the lesson. Discuss your thoughts with your group. Be prepared to share. Exponential Growth and Decay

  22. Activity 2 • Lesson Analysis II Lesson Seed Review Read the assigned lesson thoroughly. Use the UDL Educator Checklist as a tool to evaluate the lesson. As a group, determine how the learning experiences in this lesson could be modified to incorporate the principles of UDL?

  23. Think-Pair-Share /Lesson Seed Review • Activity 3 • MSDE Lesson Seeds • Read the assigned MSDE lesson seed thoroughly. • How do the learning experiences described in the lesson seed • incorporate the Principles of UDL? • 3. How do the learning experiences described in the lesson • seed support the development of : • Mathematical Skills • Conceptual Understandings • Standard for Mathematical Practice
