Doppler Effect Problems

Explore Doppler Effect problems with a focus on calculating frequency changes based on relative motion. Learn the formula: f' = f (V_sound ± V_detector) / (V_sound ± V_source). Follow a three-step approach: Step 1 - Identify and label all variables involved. Step 2 - Solve for the unknown variable. Step 3 - Remember that V_detector is positive when moving towards the source. Gain insights into how sound waves are affected by the motion of the source and the observer.

  1. Doppler Effect Problems

f’ = f (Vsound +/- Vdetector)/ (Vsound +/- Vsource) Step 1: Identify and label all the variables. Step 2: Solve for the variable you are trying to find. Step 3: Vdetectoris (+) if the detector moves towards the source. Step 4: Vsource is (-) if the source moves towards the detector. Step 5: Plug N Chug ( with units). Step 6: Does the answer make sense?
  2. Doppler Effect Challenge

At a NASCAR race, a speeding car approaches Sally, who is in the stands, at a speed of 40 m/s. Sally gets up to go to the concession stand, and briskly walks at 2 m/s in a direction away from the speeding car. The driver of the car (the source) hears a sound of 2000Hz. What frequency does she perceive?

At a NASCAR race, a speeding car approaches Sally, who is in the stands, at a speed of 40 m/s. Sally gets up to go to the concession stand, and briskly walks at 2 m/s in a direction away from the speeding car. The driver of the car (the source) hears a sound of 2000Hz. What frequency does she perceive? Answer: f’ = 2253Hz
  4. Doppler Effect Challenge

The speeding car approaches Sally again. This time Sally perceives a frequency of 2345Hz, while the driver of the car ( the source) hears a sound of 2000 Hz. If Sally is sitting still this time, how quickly is the speeding car approaching Sally?

Answer: Vsource = 50 m/s
