  5. Winter in Valley Forge • Winter 1777 – 1778 • Terrible conditions • Disease (nearly 4000 too ill/weak to fight) • Soldiers lack shoes, blankets, critical supplies • Received desperately needed training from Baron von Stueben • Turned militia into soldiers
