Role Play- “Ask yourself…” Scene 1 • What type of relationship do I want to have with this person? • Is my interaction helpful or hurtful to the vision, mission and philosophy of the CSCP? • Will my interaction with the administrator foster a positive response to this question, “ How are students different as a result of my interaction with them?”

  8. “AMBIGUOUS” LEADERSHIP • How does your role ambiguity impact your ability to ESTABLISH, MAINTAIN, IMPROVE your relationship with your administrator?

  9. “CONFLICTED” LEADERSHIP • How does your role conflict impact your ability to ESTABLISH, MAINTAIN, AND IMPROVE your relationship with your administrator?

ESTABLISHMENT STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR ESTABLISHING A C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Counselor must have a clear understanding of his/her role and function • Meet with administrators individually & collectively • Get a working understanding of the administrator’s leadership styles • What has been the administrators’ relationship to/with counseling/counselors • Make a clear case for how you can be a strong positive influence in fulfilling the overall mission of the school, i.e. AYP.

ESTABLISHMENT CONT’D MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK: • Management agreement discussed and signed • Buy-in from faculty & staff, i.e. involvement • Buy-in from parents & PTA • Regular feedback/meetings with principal. i.e. what can I do within my area of expertise and guidelines to help make your job easier?

  12. MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR MAINTAINING A C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Regular meetings- formal & informal • Ensure your visibility by participating/chairing committees, etc. • Finding a specific project the principal needs help with and volunteer to help

  13. MAINTENANCE CONT’D MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK: • Consistently fulfilling your role • Advocating for all students in all the domains-academic, personal/social, career • Being a resource, consultant, confidante

  14. IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES (THAT WORK) FOR IMPROVING C/A RELATIONSHIP: • Find ways to include your administrators in the counseling program • Use your counseling skills to show empathy, a nonjudgmental attitude and support for your principal’s work load

  15. IMPROVEMENT CONT’D MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK : • Use data to show/prove your (counseling program) reason for existence • Always reassure your principal that you both have the same end result in mind. • Be a team player • Be gracious and supportive

  16. BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS: • Uses data from assessments to increase student achievement • All students receive services • Collaboration allows the sharing of information for closing the gap.
