  3. How to fill out your Scantron • Name: Write your first and last name neatly • Subject: Unit One Pre • Period: ELA 7-6 • Date: 08-15-12 • Test No.: leave blank

  4. Unit One Pretest • Directions: Read the paragraph, and then answer the questions below it. Mark the letter of your answer on the Scantron. Choose “E” to indicate “I don’t know” if you are not sure of the answer. • Purpose: The purpose of this test is to show me what you already know. Yes, I know that you are very smart. So show me!  • Time limit: 15 minutes • What should I do when I finish the test? • Remain seated and quiet • Cover your Scantron • Read, draw, or work on last night’s homework • Remain quiet. 

  5. How to set up your “Rewriter’s Notebook” Ms. Hines August 15, 2012 7th grade English/Language Arts and Advanced Content Based on the teachings and research of Jeff Anderson’s Mechanically Inclined

So what is the purpose of the notebook? • A place where your writing won’t get marked up by anyone, perhaps, yourself. • Everything in the notebook is in process all the time. • It’s a place to return-reread and rewrite. • It’s a place to create a play with language. • It’s a place to apply what you learn (new craft techniques).

  7. Rewriter’s Notebook Guidelines • Never tear out a page of your notebook. Never! • Leave the first two pages to be used as the “Table of Contents” (TOC). • Number pages on the right-hand side, starting after the TOC. • Write the page number on the bottom right-hand side. • Write inside the red lines (stay out of the margins). • Each entry must be dated and assigned a topic and page number. • Do not draw or write on the cover of your notebook. 

Step One: Inside Cover Setup Please be sure to print neatly.  • First and last name • Example: Stephanie Hines • Period (find and write your correct period) • ELA 7-3 • ELA 7-4 • ELA 7-5 • AC ELA 7-6 • Begin date (this is the date that you set up your notebook) • Example: August 15, 2012 • Griffin MS (Ms. Hines and Ms. Dalton)

  9. Step Two: Table of Contents Setup Please be sure to print neatly.  • Parts of the Table of Contents (TOC): • Date • Assignment/Topic • Page # • Table of Contents (written at the top of the page in larger letters)

  10. Now it’s time to number your pages… • Number pages on the right-hand side, starting after the TOC. • Write the page number on the bottom right-hand side. • Number your pages front and back. • Remember even numbers go on the left hand side and odd number go on the right hand side.

  11. Topic: My first letter to my teachers • Date: 08-16-12 • Rewriter’s Notebook entry #1 • Directions: You will write a friendly letter (to Ms. Hines and Ms. Dalton) telling us about yourself. Be sure to include all of the questions that you answered on the “Letter to the teacher: What is important to YOU?” handout. • Remember to stay inside of the red lines.
